Consumer Reports compares Mustang Camaro Challenger

2010 Ford Mustang tested by Consumer Reports

The Big 3 have been in the news plenty here lately, that’s for sure. Today, however, we aren’t going to focus on financial crises, bailouts, or Who’s on first. We’re here to talk comparison & contrast: specifically between the revamped Ford Mustang, the redesigned Chevrolet Camaro, and the reborn Dodge Challenger. Consumer Reports has compiled a comprehensive test on these three contenders and produced a video to share with us on the results. If a picture’s worth a thousand words, then this clip is worth…you get the idea. Grab some popcorn and a soda, because this one’s worth watching.

i think the camaro need to change the nose from smiling to being more striaght more like the old car the back of car is ok for now inside of car nice leave it… just take the dip out of the front and the challenger looks nice but way to big and so is the camaro challenger looks great and should not change the appearence of the car just the size of it ..mustang nice job just have to work on making it a real sports car build the suspention like the vet ,thets what i want to see and this car will eat it up becuase i know the hp is there but the handling is not… that is the next step for the stang to keep ahead of camaro and dogde….. thank you for lisening

You say the mustang needs suspension like the other two cars can handle like crap…. please. The Camaro is impressive but my 05 mustang handles better after a few suspension modifications. I’ve spent far less on mods then buying either one would cost, and would dust either one. Road or track, straight or corners.

    Hey Rich,

Too bad your Cobra cost twice as much as the Camaro :-P

A ’98 Mustang Cobra costing more than a new Camaro? You must be on some good stuff!!!

The Camaro needs to offer big power and handling because of of its size and weight. Big power and handling needs to translate to performance. However, the new Camaro’s performance versus bang-for-the-buck is lost in translation. I have to pay more money for a V-8 Camaro or Challenger than I would for a Mustang, then pay more for gas too. Everytime I see a new Camaro, which is not very often thank goodness, it reminds me of the fat kid from elementary school with the goofy smile.

As for the Challenger, I guess the “challenge” for Chrysler is to see how many people they can rip off before everyone realizes that the Challenger isn’t a realistic vehicle in todays sports car market. Sure, it has big power and a classic look, but I wouldn’t pay all that money to drive around in a car that has one of the lamest interiors I’ve seen in awhile. I worked hard for my money, and when I spend $30K+ for a car, I don’t want a KIA interior.

I like to look of the new 2010 Mustang interior, but the exterior leaves me wondering…what the hell were the Ford designers thinking with the tail of the Mustang. The forward-slant look does not flow with the rest of the car. I guess it’s a love it/hate it thing as some people tell me that they don’t mind it. Also, does the car need that much plastic along the bottom? I know the engine doesn’t make the big power numbers like the Camaro or Challenger, but it does make better use of the power it does generate. I can’t wait for the new Coyote V-8 to debut in the Stang. It looks to me like Ford is still one step ahead of the competition…again.

I look at it like this I personally think the Camaro is to big and they even though it resembles the 69 it is an ugly car in my eyes. and with a 6.2 liter Chevy could have done way more than 420 HP when a little 4.6 281 ci is pushing 315. I feel Chevy could have done way better than what they did. Another thing is how long will the Camaro even last this time??. As for the Challenger I think it is deffintly the best looking of the three cars but that is all it has going for it. The Hemi is nothing and they really did a piss poor job performance wise. The Mustang is on top in my eyes it is a very good looking car and it may be a little slower than the Camaro but like I said its only 281 ci and I am more than happy to know that Fords little 4.6 is close to Chevys 6.2 If i were to buy one of these cars it would deffintley Be the Mustang over the other two….and besides its a Ford which makes it all the better

P.S. Ford is the only one of the three that didn’t need our tax dollars to bail them out………..

I think the Mustang wins hands down. It may not have the head turning style of the Camaro , this is the only place the Camaro wins. Camaro also beats the Mustang 0-60 by tenths of a second.
Where the Mustang wins is better ergonomics inside, you see all around and over the hood, you look out the front window you can gauge where the front of the car is better than the camaro. The camaro’s roof line is too low and 6ft or taller passenger’s have about 1 inch of room to spare . The Camaro Tsunamis rear pillars make it difficult to judge backing out of a parking space. The Mustang is 300lbs lighter has 111hp less, has better ergonomics inside, and has equal performance of the Camaro with better gas mileage to boot. Ford is the only survivor of the three – Mustang/Chanllenger/Camaro muscle cars over the past 40 plus years. Ford has done it’s homework well and has fine tuned the Mustang over the years improving it’s handling characteristics, it has better steering manners than it’s rivals too. Mustang is very retro, still turns heads, has good quality interior with good visibility better than camaro and challenger. Mustang has muscle car performance for a better price. Ford also more reliable too.

Mustang, better ergonomics, better driveability, better gas mileage, muscle car performance, all for better price.

Now let me go shop for a new Mustang…..
Mustang is like a fine wine….more refined than the other’s….hahahahahaha

Camaro looks nice, but that’s about all. Inside is cheap, difficult seeing out the windows. Only beats the Mustang by tenths of seconds 0-60. But burns more gas, and probably just like the past chevy’s, will quickly succumb to problems and be in the shop for repairs a lot. I once had an 86 V6 auto with t-tops that camaro sucked. I paid 14k for it and over the 7 years I had it spent about another 14k in repairs it was forever in the shop for something and t tops leaked. 2011 camaro probably remake of same old cheap 86 model, will perform nice for about a year then fall apart. later in years I bought a v6 mustang 2003 had it for 7 years and NEVER spent any big money on repairs just general maintenance was the most reliable car I ever owned the only problem was a burnt out tail lamp….that’s it. The Mustang was flawless when it came to repairs, there just were NO repairs to be made it held up and performed flawlessly. Ford is much better than Chevy for performance and reliability.

trust me I know. I’ve had camaro’s and I’ve had mustangs mustang is way BETTER than chevy.
Better Reliablity, better ergonomics, better over all performance. The only thing camaro has over mustang is styling. The camaro is more of a head turner. And just like a bimbo, it’s “high” maintenance. You’ll buy it, you’ll love it for the first year, then when it starts breaking down and crying all the time , it will be turning your wallet inside out.

consumer reports also judged mustang more practicle, more fun to drive than camaro / challenger.
camaro is a good performer in the tests but in the long run is it a RELIABLE car????? from past experiences with chevy camaro I can surely tell you it is not a reliable car. I’ll have to wait a few years to see the reports to see how camaro stacks up to Mustang”good old faithful”….. Mustang surely is one head turner that’s fun to drive, performs well, is agile, is a true muscle car, and is more refined and is a car that has stood the test of time. My vote is for the Mustang.
