Engine
Starting off with the most important component of the 427R, we see a stock three valve 4.6 liter engine that comes standard in the Mustang GT. However, the vinyl decals on the hood announce something special about this car. Lifting the hood reveals the center piece of the engine bay. The Roushcharger Supercharger that provides this pony with an additional 127 hp and 71 lb-ft of torque. The Eaton based supercharger provides the stock engine with 6 pounds of boost and uses a water-air intercooler to keep the temperatures in check. The car receives a new computer tune to account for the added horsepower and of course, the car now requires premium fuel. Using a clever system that bypasses air around the supercharger at part throttle, the car maintains great drivability and efficiency when not letting the supercharger sing. Other than the supercharger, the car uses a stainless steel Roush cat-back exhaust to expel the hot exhaust gases while giving the car a much throatier note. All of this added power makes this car a missile off the starting line. It is truly a point and aim car with almost 50% more power than stock. Use caution when pressing the loud pedal, as the 18 inch tires in the rear will have trouble finding traction with almost 400 lb-ft of torque. The best part, however, is the fact that all this power comes with a 3 year/30,000 mile warranty.
Exterior
One must take caution when purchasing this vehicle, as it will cause paranoia due to the fact that it appears to be traveling triple digit speeds whether it is moving, or merely sitting in your driveway. The looks of the car undeniably back up the performance. Whiplash will be experienced by anyone that encounters this car on the road. Its ground effects package is accented by a hood scoop and hood and side striping that make a bold statement everywhere you go. The rear spoiler and side scoops give the car a muscular look, while not being too over-the-top. The wheels are 18 inches in diameter, and the chrome adds to the attention grabbing looks with a classic five spoke design.
Interior
The interior of this car is just as eye-catching as the exterior. Body color matched inserts make a bright statement when you sit down. Roush whiteface gauges emit a green glow at night. Gear selections are made with a billet shift knob, while your clutch foot will rest on a set of Roush aluminum pedals. Roush floor mats finish off the interior touches.
Handling and Suspension
True sports cars must be a total package. They must excel in all areas, not just one. Roush lives up to its reputation with this car by giving it not only usable power, but also giving it the suspension and handling capabilities to impress as well. Roush has replaced springs, struts, shocks, bushings, sway bars and stock jounce bumpers with all new Roush components. The combination provides an excellent ride quality, while providing the needed g-forces to get your heart racing. It handles extremely well, and isn't rough enough to dislodge dental work.
Performance
While numbers look great on paper, the true test of this car comes in real world tests, such as a dyno and quarter mile flog. On the dyno, a 427 was documented to put down 365 rwhp, which, when drivetrain losses are accounted for, is dead on with the 427 hp number put out by Roush. On the strip, while the power and street tire combination makes for an exciting trip down the track, the car is traction limited to a low 13 second quarter mile. However, some sticky tires and more practice with the car should place this machine solidly in the 12 second club.
