Not since 1970 has a Drag Pack car been offered from a car manufacturer. Roush Performance
seeks to change this all with its up and coming Drag Pack edition
Mustang. Based off the Roush Stage 3, the Drag Pack features the best
parts offered by Roush for the drag strip. Roush has thought of
everything with this car, and it is a perfectly rounded drag racing
package.
With the base of the Drag Pack being the Roush Stage 3,
the horsepower department is pretty well covered, however, that wasn't
good enough. Roush adds a smaller supercharger pulley to the Roushcharger supercharger, and gives it a new computer tune to crank the power up to about 430hp.
The drivetrain of the car receives many upgrades, as the stock
pieces are destined for failure. The car receives an aluminum flywheel,
upgraded clutch, driveshaft, 4.10 rear gear, extended wheel studs, and
an upgraded rear end differential. Because this car leaves the factory
with a set of stock tires as well as a set of drag slicks, Roush
remembered to include a driveshaft safety loop in its list of
modifications, knowing that the car wouldn't pass track tech
inspections without it.
The entire chassis receives attention, including bracing on the rear
end, as well as new brackets for the control arms. Attached to these
brackets are a set of Roush's very own tubular upper and lower control
arms, which keep the rear of the car planted on those high RPM
launches. Fully adjustable front and rear shocks help you dial in the
suspension, and also allow you to run a comfortable setting on the way
to the track, and then switch to full race when you get to the pits. A
new panhard rod and relocation kit help keep the rear end from moving
side to side, and a rear stabilizer bar is added.
Inside the car, drivers will find a relocated battery, which is
moved to the trunk to place more weight over the rear tires, as well as
a battery on/off switch mounted outside, once again to pass tech
inspections. In the cabin, the driver can keep his focus down track due
to the shift light equipped tachometer that Roush installs.
While this car seems like the perfect package, Roush knows that most
Mustang owners can't leave a car unmodified, even if it comes with
Roush's entire catalog of parts already installed, so they offer a few
optional upgrades. Owners can choose to install a set of carbon fiber
fenders and a carbon fiber hood for a few extra pounds of weight loss.
An ice box system is available for the supercharger to keep the inlet
temperatures as close to ambient or cooler as possible. A line lock can
be installed to assist with burnouts, and the transmission can receive
better shift forks, an SFI approved bell housing, and even a reverse
lockout if desired. Roush offers its popular short shifter and a set of
straight pipes for the exhaust as well. They truly seem to have covered
every base with this car.
This car was not just pieced together with every part in Roush's
catalog. It was beaten and flogged for over 200 quarter mile runs, and
even competed in a drag racing class the past racing season. If the
Roush engineers found anything wrong, or noticed a weak link in any
component, it was taken back to the drawing board and redesigned. This
car has seen multiple 11.9 second runs at over 113 mph.
Only 50 Drag Pack equipped Roush's are scheduled for production, so
if you would like one for your collection, catch it if you can. Stay
tuned to RPM Planets and Planet Mustang for more updates on the Drag Pack cars.
