Here's the "footwork" video you all wanted...

I put up a video the other day of an in car shot of me going through the gears, the only thing was you couldn't see the "footwork" going on in the last video. Well... here it is. I had my wife go with me on our lunch break and do a little more in car video. Its like 30 some degrees here, so the nitto's didn't hook as well as they did in the last one as you'll hear when I hit 2nd gear. Well, I hope this helps some of the other guys that are trying to learn to shift quicker what is going on with the pedals... again this is EXACTLY how I drive at the track. I don't powershift it as you can see I lift (although VERY quickly) between every gear change. Anyway... enjoy. I am actually suprised the tires held in 1st for as cold as it is out, even though I just rolled into it. For the guys wanting to know how to "launch" if you watch closely as I pull out I launch the same way... you'll see my right foot move very little and my left foot operating the clutch does most of the work. This is a poor example as I couldn't pull out with any decent RPM but it will give you the idea.

Paul's Foot Work!

PS- I made a "fly by" video too, but I don't have time to upload it right now. I will later tonight.

I was shifting right at 6000rpms on the stock tach, or did you mean the sound of the motor as soon as I hit 2nd? If that's what you mean that was the tires spinning as soon as I hit 2nd and then them grabbing.

I had my wife take 2 in car videos. This one is a close up of my feet and I wasn't going to show it, but it will give you another idea of what is going on. I didn't like it at first because it was almost TOO close, but now I think this one is the best.

I like how you can hear the motor as the tires break loose in second. Those are very helpful videos. Do you move your seat up at all when you race? For me, I've always found that moving the seat up slightly helps me stab the clutch a little better. I'm also assuming by how fast you shift the clutch doesn't get completely disengaged? My fastest shifts always come when I don't disengage the clutch ("half-clutching").

Christ Paul, you should open up a library for all these "educational" videos you're making. We'll call it PBS - Paul's Broadcasting System.

Joe

I couldn't tell if it was that or you slipping the clutch some, but yeah that's what I was talking about.

I second the PBS..............

We could add a vid. of someone powershifting to give a view of how that is done as well.. call it driving FAQ.

Joe, at the track I move the seat WAY up so I have to do a lot less "reaching" and shifting with my arm as you mentioned earlier. Its NOT comfortable, but it definitely helps. I do TOTALLY disengage the clutch though... it get pushed the whole way to the floor on every one of those shifts in the video, if I don't it will NOT go into gear. Watch my left leg and you'll see how far down it goes.

Paul- what kind of tutorial do you want me to write? I mean stuff happens so quick that its hard to tell someone what is going on. Its just a quick stab and grab. I do leave off the throttle, I do push the clutch pedal all the way down, I cup the shifter and pull it back on the 1-2, then I palm the back of the shifter for the 2-3, and then reposition my hand to cup and pull the shifter back. If you do this you will virtually eliminate missed shifts (unless you have driveline issues like me). If you "force" the shifter you'll miss the gate and it won't go in.

I'm glad you guys like these videos. I know from looking at some of the combos on here and the dyno numbers they are making that they should be faster than they are. Shifting is a big part of that... think about it when you are shifting you are NOT accelerating, so the quicker you can get it done the better.

In case the above links go down, here are the same videos... Try the above links FIRST.

Here's my "fly by" I just did it for fun... the tires AGAIN did not hook when I hit 2nd!

Nice vids Paul. I wish my car revved that fast...3.08's
That is exactly how I shift, except for the 3-4 shift. On that one I use a little more wrist (see the first vid). Instead of cupping from the side on that one I cup higher up, not quite directly on top. That way you can flick your wrist back at the same time as you pull back, gaining a little more speed (and you really don't have to worry about missing 4th). Now I want to know what I can do at the track lol.
As far as people needing to practice, I developed my skills from always being late to school, and hauling @ss to make it to class on time. The fast shifting was a biproduct of necessity.

Paul, you definately have what it takes to powershift. Me and a buddie just watched the vid and he said I shift just like that only I have a shorter stick on the shifter.
