1999: 28-spline axles, 3.27 gears, soft rubber bushings
2000 R: Massively more beefy. 31-spline axles, exotic 3.55 Girodisc hydro-mechanical posi unit, improved CV joints, improved camber adjustment, hardest bushings of any of the IRS units. Reduced wheel hop.
2001-02: Basically like 1999 but with a small axle improvement; axles are 31-spline on the inside but still 28-spline on the ends. Gears are 3.27:1.
2003-04: Much more like the 2000 R unit. 3.55 posi (but not Gerodisc), 31-spline axles (a bit shorter), hard bushings (still not as hard as the 2000 R), improved camber, improved bump steer. info from the DVS Restorations website |

awesome car!! I have a dumb question about the rear end. What does it use for upper arms? I only saw the lowers and struts. are the halfshafts supposed to act like an arm? and also on that note with inboard brakes... what happens if you snap a half-shaft? |

Yes, the half shafts act as control arms as well. They are designed to do this and can handle all of the loads involved. If one fails, you will have suspension failure on that side manifested as a radical change in camber, but it's built not to fail. There are thousands upon thousands of cars on the road with this design, commonly referred to as a "Jaguar IRS". |

There are more pics of it all on the previous pages. |

Pete,
Who did you pisz off not to deserve a sticky by now? I remember when you first came to the board everyone gave you crap because you were new ; but you definitly gained thier respect rather quickly and were able to contiribute to other members questions as well as your own. Even though you are selling the car you are not looking for free advertisement but you are keeping us all up to date on a project most of us could never dream of completing. I hope you have a few biddders lined up for that car. I just hate looking for the next thread to see what is next for the convertible.
My point - Please sticky this thread! |

What kind of modified parts were required for the heidt's MII?? I will be puting one of these setups in my car some time in the near future. Just wondering if there is any tips or pointers you might point out before I order one up.
Thanks for the heads up

| | | Heidt's and Horsepower
Reen,
What kind of horsepower do you suppose you could throw at the Heidt's? It seems like the limit would just have to do with whatever you throw in the 9" rear, but do they have any type of rating for the half-shafts or U-joints?
If it turns out I can actually afford it, (ha!) I'm seriously thinking about an IRS after my floor pans are done. In my dreams I'd like to have a low-compression 351w/408 under the hood approaching 500hp, and supercharge it later if I ever want something extra.
thanks,
Joe |

Graham | The only mods I had to make had to do with fitting the 4.6. If you're installing a regular small block you won't need to change a thing. |

ps. sticky please! | With the car stripped, it takes me about 40 hours start to finish. That's with being really anal about the measurements and every little detail, and spending a lot of time on fitment and surface prep to get nice welds. I could probably do it in half the time and have it function fine, but not look nearly as clean and finished. |

thanks,
Joe | Well, it's got a Currie Trac-Loc 9", 31-spline Strange axles, and monster U-joints. The Currie solid axle setup with basically the same specs is rated to 600+ horsepower conservatively, and I bet that this would be similar. The only semi-unknown is the U-joints and halfshafts, and I'm in the process of just doing the calculations myself to be able to answer this question. Heidt's can't answer it -- they just say "well, nobody's ever called us claiming they broke one." | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
