oil filter failure PH2

ok... driving down the road... 50mph.. friday on the way to lunch.... in my baby.... 96 cobra.... 186K miles.... look in the rear view... smoke.... bad smoke... pull into turn lane.... smoke coming out of dash... not good... smoke coming out of hood... not good.... trun car off soon as im in the turn lane... smell burning oil.... pop hood....

oil leaking from driver side of motor near oil filter... so much coming out cant tell .. plus smoke...oil burning off of exhaust.... by the time the tow truck gets there... huge puddle of oil on the road.... mobil1 mind you.... 3500 miles on the oil and filter.... was time to change it.. but geez... tow the car home.... planned trip delayed the investigation... mind going nuts.. is the motor gone.... always wanted a 5.4 32V .. but lack of cash wont allow it..... get home today....put my hand on the oil filter.... twist... with a little effort... unscrew the oil filter.... as soon as the oil filter clears... gasket falls onto ground....

so... my question is... what caused this... over torque of the filter?.... gasket was warped... and split... bad filter?

either way im off to buy a new ford filter and 6 qt's of mobil 1 .... more to come....

What do you guys think about Purolator Pure Ones?
I've been using them with synthetic in my Mustangs for quite a few years, but I guess it only takes one bad one to have a really bad experience.

Never.... EVER... EVER!!! use Scam.. I mean Fram filters. I had one twist into two pieces when I installed it. Never got it to fully hand tight.. pop.. Off came the shell. Stick with Ford!! Never a problem.

They are better than Fram I'm sure. I haven't read anything bad about the Pure One or their Premium Plus line of filters.

I've used Purolator filters for many years in several of my vehicles with no problems. I can't comment on the Pure One product line because I don't think I've ever used it. However, as Uncle Meat stated, they can't possibly be any worse than the Fram filters. There are far too many horror stories out there about Fram for me to ever put one of their products on one of my cars.
