How many miles? How does the coolant look?

First thing to check would be the head gasket.

+1 - First two signs of head gasket failure.

gaskets are cheap, scroll down to the 4.9 parts

http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/ or choose correct year and search for head gasket

Ok thanks guys , 1 other thing its a real pig on gas , i mean it sucks more than the mustang, i get around 8 to 10 miles per, i was thinknig if a bad O2 sensor would cause this,? should i cange out the old 1 as i think its the origional 1 , the truck has 270 thou km on it. this is my winter beeter, the coolant looks to be all good. Cheers !

Not a bad sensor. Not really much you can do about the gas mileage. That simply is one of the cons to the engine design. New they averaged 14-18 at best.

With as many miles as there are on it, that MPG is actually reasonable. Once you get the head gasket replaced and give it a general tune-up (if you have not already) you should be back to 12-15 range.
