Hey guys, my girlfriend recently got a 2001 v6 convertible (gotta love a girl who likes her stangs ) but she always talks about how she wishes it would sound more like mine (Ive got a '95 5.0 with an o/rH and 40 series ) Im thinking of getting her a replacement catback for her stocker, just a little something to give it a bit of throat at idle and make a little noise on acceleration, but rather mellow all around and not droning on the highway. Any suggestions or clips for me? Its kind of hard to find opinions on setups like this, because it seems like most threads are talking about true dual swaps and the like. Thanks in advance!

There is one thing for certain than I know.Owning both a V6 and a 5.0.You'll never get that V6 to sound like the 5.0.

The reason many V6'rs go the true dual setup,It's the only way to get a real sound change out of that exhaust.The exhaust on these cars sound more like a straight 6 than a V6.The Y pipe plays a big factor with this.A performance muffler wont give you much of a good sound.It's still too quiet,and sounds nearly the same.

Even if you gut out the cats,it may be a lot louder but it doesn't completely get rid of that straight 6 sound.There are however,2 methods of getting a real good sound but it will require extra work and time by you.I don't want to get too technical here so I'll stop.

I don't know what your gf is looking for in sound.Your best bet,go to mustangexhaust.com .It has TONS of sound clips.Some V6's even.

i put a catback exhaust system with flowmasters and turndowns on my 04 V6. it def. made a difference in loudness, but it def. wouldn't be any comparison to the throaty sound of the 5.0. i have had ppl ask me if my car was a GT, saying that my car sounds closer to what a stock GT sounds like.

I have the MAC cat-back on mine, keeping the Y-pipe, and I'm pleased with how it sounds. It's not the same as a V6, but it has a nice throaty idle and nice roar on takeoff. It doesn't buzz or sound ricey at any RPM. I've wondered how it would sound if I went with true duals...

I had a muffler shop make an h pipe for mine with some magnaflow 2 1/2 inch mufflers and used some mandrel bent 2 1/2 tail pipes for a 87-93 GT. The tail pipes fit perfect and turned down right before the rear bumper, could not hardly see them. It sounds throaty at low rpm. get higher than 2500 and you can tell its a 6.

Yeah,but it DOES sound a LOT better.Getting rid of that dumb Y-pipe is the main sound changer.What I wanted to say in the above post buit thought it was too technical.......Pass on the next bit if you dont like complicated reads..

The Y-pipe transforms the sound dramatically.Reason being,the exhaust flow coming from the pass side header and meets up with the flow from the drivers side at exactly the same point.The exhaust "notes" coming from each side is nearly identical on a properly running engine.These "notes" or "tones" meet up with each other at the same point and are equally forced into one chamber (pipe).This equalizing of the two separate flows cancels out many of the lower tones within the exhaust.It's more of a depolarization issue.If the header pipe from say the drivers side was longer or shorter than the pass side,it wouldn't have that crappy stuffed up sound like it has now.
