Comparing the republican run civil war era north to todays liberal blue states is laughable. the political climate has changed so much since then.. todays most conservative republicans would be considered radical liberals or socialist by the republicans of the 1860's and laughed out of politics.. Todays liberals would be unthinkable in those times. Neither the dems or repubs of today would elect a single member to congress or senate let alone the presidency in those days.
there is no way you can compare any of the political parties of the mid 19th century to anything in politics today.
It's like comparing apples to aircraft carriers
