Read to the end for the meaning of life...
Evolution is now a very interesting subject for me. I was perusing the internet looking for some information on Hemochromatosis when I came across an interesting book review. Evidently there is an author, Dr. Sharon Moalem, who believes that many of life’s ailments can actually be traced back to an evolutionary step, especially if the ailment has a gene involved. Some people say, “Well why would nature create a disease to fight another one?” and the answer is this… When faced with a certain death in a short time, a genetic disorder that is non lethal will win every time. Even if the genetic disorder is lethal today, like my Hemochromatosis, the average life expectancy untreated can be 40-50 years or more. This is longer than the average life expectancy of people 1,000+ years ago.
A few examples I’ve found from his work:
Type 1 Diabetes: Said to be prevalent in people of Northern European ancestry, may actually be a sort of natural antifreeze. The excess sugar in the blood causes it to be thicker. There is a frog in Northern Europe that actually FREEZES SOLID during the winter. How does it do this? It actually gets severe diabetes in the winter and its blood turns to slush.
Peeing When It Is Cold: This is said to have the same effect. The more dehydrated you are, the thicker your blood.
Hemochromatosis (Iron Overload): Now this one is interesting. There are a couple of theories. Most people (if not all) who have this condition are thought to have Northern European Ancestry, more specifically Britain, Ireland, Scotland and Scandinavia. One theory is that the Vikings being a war culture lost a lot of blood regularly and the genetic mutation may be a response. The cure for iron overload is in fact bloodletting. Another interesting theory is that it helped the Celts to absorb more iron from less nutrients.
---The kicker with this disorder is the
BUBONIC PLAGUE. It is thought that the prevalence of this gene may be directly attributed to our bodies trying to ward off the Bubonic Plague, which killed ¼ to 1/3 of European men. Documentation from the 14th century states that men contracted the plague 2 to 1 over women. Iron overload affects men many times more than women. Here’s the interesting bit… The plague is caused by bacteria. Bacteria need heavy metal

, usually iron, to multiply. Hemochromatosis causes an overload in iron in all facets of the body save one. That one is the WHITE BLOOD CELLS. The white blood cells of a person with iron overload actually have LESS IRON SATURATION than a normal person. The bubonic plague actually attacks the lymphatic system and uses it to replicate. Viola!
There is also speak of African American diseases such as...
SICKLE CELL ANEMIA: This is thought to ward off malaria.
There is thought that the reason for the prevalence of
Prostate Cancer among New England black men is their lack of vitamin D, which the body produces after sunlight exposure. A study done a year ago shows that extra vitamin D in the blood had no conclusive aid in warding off the cancer, but that it may keep the cancer from being so aggressive. You see, a dark skinned black man in New York City is completely out of his element in terms of light absorption. The less intense light in the north, combined with the black man’s already dark complexion may lead to a deficiency in Vitamin D.
Cliff’s notes:
Strype will never get the Bubonic Plague, and if he did he’d probably live through it.
