Have you guys seen what he did on the Letterman Show? Hot Air Blog Archive Video: The freaky triple deaky Joaquin Phoenix trainwreck interview
I thought I saw a thread on this before. This dude has LOST IT. Everyone thinks it's a hoax, I beg you to read his WIKIPEDIA page and then tell me it's a host.
NUTSO!!!!!!!!!!! Joaquin Phoenix - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Quote: His father, John Lee Bottom, was a lapsed Catholic[8] from Fontana, California.[9] His mother, Arlyn Phoenix (née Dunetz), was born in the Bronx, New York to Jewish parents from Hungary and Russia.[8] In 1968, Arlyn left her family and moved to California, later meeting Phoenix's father while hitch-hiking. They married in 1969, then later joined the religious cult the Children of God. They began travelling throughout South America.[9]
His parents eventually became disillusioned with the Children of God; they made the decision to leave the cult and returned to the U.S. in 1978. They changed their last name to "Phoenix" to symbolize a new beginning.

Not only did the guy appear to be stoned, but he was a royal snot about the whole "I'll come chew gum at your house" part of the interview. He's one of those buttholes that thinks he's soooooooo sophisticated and sooooooooo intellectual that everyone else is beneath him, he acts like he's too serious to take a frickin' joke, and he's obviously suffering from some serious delusions of grandeur ... and he acts like he's stoned out of his gourd, to boot.
Screw 'im. He's a waste. He's every bit as much an arsehole in real life as the characters he plays in his movies. I won't miss seeing him in any future flicks, anyway. |

I started singing "Andy are ya goofin on Elvis, Hey baby, Are we losing touch?"
Then I read that wiki article and a couple of things came to mind...
A) His brother died in his arms (we all know the River Pheonix tragedy), outside of Johnny Depp's night club in 1993
B) His parents were cult worshiping folk
C) He started life in the spot light (Britney Spears anyone?)
D) He's been in rehab for alcoholism before
E) His best friend, Heath Ledger, was also into RAP music and HATED the media
D) Heath Ledger's last performance was haunting, and no one could really grieve for him
I don't know that this guy is super intelligent, but if he is with that comes a fine line. I grew up with a guy who was a certified genius. He lost his grip. I was best friends with another certified genius as a teenager, he lives like a hermit and does mechanic work. My wife's uncle works with supposedly one of the smartest guys on the planet, he sits on tables in meetings with gov't officials and chews his tie.
The ONLY thing that has me second guessing is the Aflec boy following him around with a camera. But if I were to do something like an Andy Kauffman stunt, I wouldn't make it so obvious.

The thing is, he seemed to have just about the same stoned/gum chewing character in the clip they showed. That just looked like a boring movie and in real life a girl like that would be calling the police if someone like him wanted to follow her. Or we'd hear about her disappearance on the news for the next six years... |

What's striking is when I saw a clip of him on Letterman from awhile back and he was TOTALLY different - much more animated and lively, talked like a normal human being, didn't act like (as much of) a complete snob, etc. ... and now there's this. Either something has totally snapped in this dude's brain and he's fallen WAY off the tracks, or this is indeed some "witty" Andy-style publicity stunt.
Either way, I still have the same feeling about this whole deal: |

My thoughts exactly. The fact that people are starting to buy it shows how well he's doing. |

At the end of the skit on Letterman, you can see him take off his glasses, turn to Letterman and shake his hand. If you listen closely, at about this time, Phoenix seems to say "good job" to Letterman. This is most definitely a skit. |

If this is the case he is brilliant. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
