Headlights shut off when on for awhile?

I have an 87 gt with smoked aftermarket headlights. I just bought the car and not sure what make they are; however, when they are on for a long time they shut off or they shut off when I have the fog lights on. Does anyone know why they are doing this?

I have heard plent of horror stories about the GT's having headlight problems because of the way the fogs are wired in. When the headlights on my LX started to do that it was because I just needed to replace the pigtails on each headlight as the wires were old and cracking so they were unstable. Check those out first.

Mine started doing that one time on my old 87 LX. Headlight switch needed replacing. Feel the switch when they go off and see if it's really hot. Mine was, switched it out with a new one, and no more lights going off.

this used to happen to my 92 gt whenever i had the fog lights on. the switch would get hot and then the lights would shut off. i found this article on allfordmustangs.com that fixes this and lets you run the fog lights without having to turn on your head lights, just the parking lights.
