Can anyone tell me what the problem might be. I have a 98 3.8L and have black smoke coming out of the drivers side exhaust pipe. The pipe is all covered in black. Don't know what the problem could be.

More than likely your cats are plugged. Replace em.

I dont know about the cats..but your stang is running very rich. Does the exhaust smell like gas? Do you have a Check Engine light on? You may wish to connect a code scanner to verify the problem. There may be short term codes that havn't registered a CE light yet.
