Front headlight question

On my recently purchased '03 I noticed that when I put on the high beams the low beams go out. The only time both sets are on is when I pull the high beam lever toward me, which of course is a temporary position. When I push the lever to the steady high beam position the high beams stay on but the low beams go out. Is this normal or are the wires screwed up. Thanks

Thanks BD Cardinal. Just wonder why its set up like that. Wouldn't both sets being on be more beneficial on a dark country road?

not really, it would succeed in blinding oncoming traffic.

Makes sense bd. If I can pick your brain on another question I posted on the forum, I would really appreciate some help. Is a whine when in first gear on an automatic trans normal for an '03 six cyl.. It sort of sounds like a power steering pump noise but goes away as soon as it shifts to the next gear. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!!
