ok, so i assumed my stang had 4:10 gears in it..... I know I know what happens when one AssUmes, anyway I looked at the sticker that comes on the window when u buy it, and it says that the axel ratio is 3:31 so is that the same thing as the gear ratio?

start with the upper hole, and if more traction is needed, try the lower hole

Why did you assume it was 4.10s? The 3.31s are standard in automatics and I think 3.53 in manuals.

i have an 09 5-speed, i never have figured out how gear ratios work i thought the lower the the number the better, cause that number tells you how many times the drive shaft spins before the tires do, so i figured lower was better, for some reason i thought 4.10 was standard and everyone was swapping to 3.73 and 3.53 lol.... i obvisouly misunderstood what i read.

its 3.55 actually and it all depends on what you're doing with your car, if you have a turbo setup then a higher gear ratio like a 3.55 or 3.73 will actually be more beneficial and help you build boost faster because it puts more load on the motor. but for N/A setups you want a lower gear like a 4.10 or 4.30 and if you really want to get serious even a 4.56

He has 3.31's, those are standard in all GT's since at least '08. And that's what his sticker says.

I know he has 3.31's I was just sayin that the other gear is a 3.55 not a 3.53 and I'm pretty sure it depends whether it's an auto or stick as to which gear you get. I could be wrong though

3.31 is standard for auto and manual, 3.55 was optional on the manual. I think it was a $155 option on my car, which is an 07. The GT500 has a 3.31, I think the Shelby GT and the Bullit might have had 3.73. Not sure on the last two.

Ahh, got ya. The 3.55's were a $300 option when I ordered mine witch was late in the '08 model year.

Ok, pretend your car has a 1:1 gear, it could go really fast but it would take a while to get there. As you increase your gear ratio, your tires spin slower with respect driveshaft, this increases acceleration, but decreases your top speed, (hence it increases your speed at any given rpm, that's why some people complain about gas mileage with 4.10's)
