Starter doesnt "line up"

My starter is grinding after did a motor and clutch swap. I tried two other starters and they did the same thing. The top starter bolt was completely stripped so i used a bolt/nut it. But now it grinds. Im pretty sure its centered but if it isnt how do i fix/adjust it so it is?

it could have something to do with it. If you try to bolt the starter without it the is a little bit of play and you could have problems liming it all up.

umm

But i even put washer before the bolts to shim it...the only part snapped off is between the bolt holes....so i need to drop the tranny and get a new inspection plate? Maybe wiring issues because the inside toward the flywheel is lined up as well as the bolt holes....im not understanding whats going on....

I swapped a 4 cylinder to a 5.0. I eliminated power steering and ac completly. Not even running eliminator pullies. I need an idea on how to run the belt because of the reverse rotation water pump. Can someone please help me out?

Thread jacking

I agree with 5L5, you need to post up some pics.

Does the motor turn by hand? Just wondering if maybe you have something in there binding up like your clutch bolts are too long or something. Put a wrench on the crank pulley bolt and give 'er a turn.

haha ya there is a difference between an auto and a manual tranny block plate. I found that out the hard way.. When I tried to put my clutch cable in and it wouldn't work cause the plate was in the way

Garage
I was just reading through this thread and I just noticed, I actually looked at buying the car that PKOVACK has in his garage. The biggest reason I didnt buy it was because of a non-complete 5-sp swap in it. Neutral saftey was missing and starting issues galore. Im glad I didnt get it else it may be me on here complaining instead of him.

if your top bolt is stripped and the block plate is partially broken then you should change both of them. i had a starter issue and went through 6 starters before i changed the block plate and bell housing. my bottom hole strippied out and i re-tapped it but it must not have been lining up right. thats whats probably happening with your starter. i would change the bell housing. you can get them from ebay or craiglist fairly cheap.
