Engine replacement & tranny rebuild

Just a little update. I have the engine almost completely together & ready to drop back into the car. It's mainly mother nature that's holding me up (damn snow & ice storms - I don't think I'm going to see the grass in my front yard until May).

Oh, and I found out the hard way that I was supposed to keep the oil filter adaptor from the core engine (that threaded tube looking thing that screws into the block and that the oil filter screws on). I tried finding a new one but the local Ford dealership was clueless so I'm going to have to take the one off of old Sadie's engine and pray that it fits (it should). But to get it off, I have to use a really huge socket and an equally huge ratchet. It's about 2 1/2 feet long so I have to jack the car up just so I can get under there with the ratchet.

Before trying to pull an old one I was just go down to the local ford dealership and pick up one for a 92 mustang 5.0. Should work great.

You can provably just use a stepdown adapter (or step up depending on how you look at it). Those oil filter fitings shouldn't be TOO tight. When I had to switch out my friends when I put that 5.0 in his Cougar I just used a regular sized breaker bar and then a socket wrench. My braker bar is about 18 inches I think. If you have a longer handle socket wrench you can provably get it out with that no problem. The one on his 289 came out with no fuss at all. The other option is to use the newer oil filter instead of changing back to the old style filter. I think the older filter has a larger capacity tho so I would stick with it.

I'll have to dig through the tools and see if I can find an adaptor. I need a 1 3/16" socket and the only one I have that big is for a 3/4" drive ratchet which is a monster of a ratchet.

Well, I found an adaptor so I could put the socket on a smaller ratchet, but that sucker would not budge. I wouldn't be suprised if the idiot previous owner put loctite or something on it. So I just went down to the Ford dealership and ordered the one from the 92 5.0. Should be here tomorrow.

New pic! It's about 99% together. My goal is to have it dropped into the engine bay on Saturday (it sould be nice enough on Friday to melt most of the 2" thick ice that's still in my front yard). Then take a couple more days to hook everything up and one more day to do the break in stuff. So I should be driving Sadie again by late next week.

Oh, and that little white clamp holding the fuel line above the "T" on the valve cover came off of the B2 stealth bomber.

i used to have some fuel line clamps from an F-15 on my car, they had a big thumbscrew looking deal on them but it wasn't really a thumbscrew just looked like one. they got stolen off my car back in 91 when some punks stole my carb.

My dad's bike has circuit breakers from the B2 and he also got some of the paint they use on it for his gas tank & fenders.

The fuel filter is behind the carb. Before, the fuel line was running right across the front of the intake and I hated it. It was always getting in the way and looked really bad so I wanted it tucked away.

I've always wanted those and I absolutely love them. They make the engine look so much neater. Of course, the set of plug wires I got were made to fit if the wires were running over the top of the valve covers so they didn't all fit using the looms. I was going to get the cut-to-fit kind, but all they had were yellow so I just bought a second set and out of the 16 wires found the 8 that fit the best. Still worth it, though.

Oh, and as for the tranny, I've decided that this spring I'm going to pull out Old Sadie's tranny and rebuild it. I was considering just buying a new or already rebuilt one because it would be faster & easier, but rebuilding one myself will be cheaper and much more educational for me. Then I'll start saving up for an EFI kit.

Well, we got 8" of snow yesterday, but it's supposed to be really nice next Tuesday and I don't have to be at work until 2:30 so if I can't get it in this weekend, I'll try to get it in then (I may have to get out there with my hair dryer and an extension cord to melt all the ice. )

And I'll get a pic of the engine bay later today.
