Ive got the coupe torn down for paint, already prepped the underside and painted it with chasis black, and we have the firewall,inner structure and radiator support base and cleared. The exterior is nearing primer, we're using a epoxy/urethane primer that has been tinted black. The final decision for me is which black paint I want put on the car?? I want black that stands out, I have seen different black paint jobs and there is definitely a difference in them. Plans are to base, scuff with pads, then base again, then a few coats of clear, let that dry, then wet sand and clear again, then a final wet sanding and buff. My paint guy is a pro and said he'd use whatever brand paint I chose to go with. Lets hear your suggestions on which black to use.......
Who makes the best blackest black paint?? Anyone....PPG, DUPONT,Sherwin Williams???

i used the cheap stuff, it is made by OMNI and i bought a gallon for about 100 bucks, i didnt clearcoat or sand anything once the color was sprayed on in my basement. I did unfortunately get lots of orange peel, which i blame on the crappy primer that we had a hard time sanding smooth...(the primer orange peeled), but the paint is smooth in the places where i sanded nearly all the primer off..anyway check my sig. for the link to pics, its a dark black and not exactly what i was looking for(satin black), but its what the guy at the paint supply store talked us into..total of under 250 for all the supplies to paint the car

the prep work def makes or breaks a paint job. I used PPG last time the car was painted and it looked good, the painter who did that job didnt take his time prepping the car and it started to show the older the paint job got. My friend who has painted a few show cars including my show truck had quit painting entire cars and doing small jobs. I asked him if he would be interested in doing the stang and he said yea, so here we are! I know my 06 silverado is black, but in the sunlight has a brownish tint to it. I just want to make sure we end up with a paint that is as black as black can get if that makes sense. The guy who has sherwin williams paint promised me he would get a mix for me that couldnt get any more black. I've just heard bad things about sherwin williams clear coat in the past , decisions decisions.............

There are alot of good paints out there and if the prep is done right you shouldn't have a problem. The motorcycle I painted last, I used Sherwin Williams Sunfire gloss black and then clear coated it. The sunfire is a single stage so it didn't need cleared and looked great the way it was but I did a clear with red pearl in it and then a couple non pearl clear coats on top of that just to get the deep look to it. I think I paid about $65 per quart for the paint but I already had the reducers and hardener from a customers job I did on his boat and don't remember how much the clear was.
Go to your paint supply store and ask for 99k it's the paint code from the grand national... Well there goes half my secret....LOL Also like said above its all in the prep work trust me I've seen guys with House of Kolors 10k paint jobs that look like the end result of a prune smoothie

I used Dupont jet-black, base coat/clear coat. As long as there at no other color additives in it, your prep and post work is where the paint will get its deep luster.

The paint supplier really has nothing to do with the color, you just need to pick the right code. Now one thing that does vary through manufacturers is coverage, depending on what the company uses to make black pigment it can take a lot longer to achaieve opacity. For example PPG makes their black from ash so it takes a lot of coats to the opacity other wise it looks a bit brown. Personally I have had the best luck with Sherwin Williams the code for their generic black is 1738, make sure to tell them this is thier paint code not the vehicles.

I thought to get a deep glossy black job you need an even (blocked) surface to begin with, lay down lots of clear, then block some more to remove all the orange peel so you can jump in and swim around??
I am really interested if there is a difference in the blacks by code (short of metallic blacks, of course!)

Dupont jet-black... 3 base coats, then 6 deep coats of clear. Prep/post paint, wetsand, blocking and buffing are where the real skill comes in.

The best black is a black that isn't 100% black....i would do a custom mix with maybe a little pearl mixed in or a tiny bit of cherry red, not enough to change it from black but enough to give it some sparkle and depth so it's not just basic black.

There is a difference between a deep look and just shine though. Anytime you add any colors to black, it changes the depth or tint of the color. If you want depth, dump the clear on.

Dupont 99k is pretty black. But PPG and all the other paint suppliers will have jet black that'll do ya real good. www.ppgcarpaints.com has everything you need. Search for Jet Black under search for paint name.

The guy who painted my car was one of the best painters I have ever seen and works for my brother, so I got a crazy deal. We did not bake any of the coats, whether it was base coat or clear coat. He would spray one deep coat of clear, let it get just about tacky (probably 45-60 minutes in between coats), spray another coat until we reached 6 coats. Normally when you spray clear like that and don't wet sand in between coats, it has a tendency to want to ripple or wave. We let it dry in the booth for 2 days and then wet sanded on the 3rd day. I blocked it and got it as flat as possible and he did the rest. Like I said, he did all of the work, but he does some amazing work. There is enough clear on my car to wet sand and buff it about 3 more times and I want to say was used almost 2 gallons of clear, or real close to it.

My painter tested a panel on my car with a tad bit of pearl in the base coat and it looked great inside under the lights, but when you got it out in the sun, the pearl was just too much for my taste. Although I think it is great look, it was not what I was looking for. My brother told me that if you had the right person painting a black car with the right paint, you won't be disappointed. IMO, even though black is the hardest to paint because it shows EVERYTHING, it is the best looking... but I am biased.
