Shooting at Virginia Tech

just heard about this as i walked in the door to work--thought of Christian and Dan immediately.

Dan's out of school, so he's in the clear, and good to hear you're alright, Christian.

on a side note, i read something about an Asian guy being the shooter and i thought "Christian??? Nah...."

R.I.P. to those unfortunate, unsuspected souls.

haha thanks Paul

What sucks is that I just came back from grabbing some food, and when some cops saw me, they held their rifles tighter. I don't blame them, but it sucks.

Worst shooting ever. Atleast thats what they are saying on CNN.

But how does someone just run around campus and NOT get caught?

this is ****ing rediculous. I hate it when stuff like this happens.

EDIT: I didn't realize that the guy did a shooting at 7am and the other one did not happen until a couple hours later. How the **** did that happen? Nice reaction time.:nonono:

**** Christian man, I'm glad you're safe

I was watching this at work and immediately thought about you going there, I'm so glad your's was the first thread I saw....

My prayers do go out to those that lost innocent loved ones today...

The press conference is live now.
Some of these reporters are idiots. They're already accusing the School of not taking appropriate action in securing the school after the first shooting. I wonder how many isolated shootings at Universities didn't turn into massacres compared to this one incident. Hindsight is 20/20 and the press is really taking advantage of this. These idiot reporters weren't the ones who had to make difficult decisions this morning.:notnice:

dude, i have friends that are still at VT who are in engineering. I have been calling every one of them, plus everyone else I know there, I have to thank God that they are all alright. I can't imagine what people are going through there, especially the ones who witnessed the shootings first hand.

I'll be praying for everyone in Blacksburg, and the victim's families for quite a while.

Glad to hear you weren't one of the victims Christian.

Blacksburg was always such a safe place...:(

Don't read this particular post if you don't want a political opinion. ;)

I don't see how anyone can blame the school for not alerting everyone that there was a shooting on campus. Do you realize how many times schools would get shut down for fear of something like this, if people were "alerted" every time there was a shooting!? There is simply NO WAY to prepare for something like this, short of military occupation. I would personnally get tired of hearing about every little incident. Same reason I don't watch the news. All they seem to like to report is how many people were killed, today. The world is not as bad as people would like to believe it is. It IS a shame though that some whack-job with a gun has the "power" to do something like this. I'll bet that if more people were allowed to carry guns, this would have stopped soon after the first shootings, this morning. ;)

Blaming the school for not doing more would be like blaming our government (president) for being an accomplice in the 9/11 attacks. Oh wait, there are people trying to make a case for that. I'll bet that, somehow, George Bush gets blamed for this. Maybe we should pull all of our students out of colleges because it's such a dangerous place to be. I know college students are all volunteers, but.... >>Rant over.<<

In all seriousness, I feel sorry for all the innocent people who were involved in this, today. In my thoughts and prayers. I'm also glad that our fellow Stangnetters are present and accounted for. I'm glad the SOB is "done".

Thanks again everyone.

I don't blame the University. In the past couple of days over the bomb threats, they did a very good job in keeping students out of that area. Honestly, who knew that this guy would travel half way across campus and do what he did. No one could have fathomed this.

Reddy, I agree with you 100%, and that's what I was saying about the media(and anyone else who criticizes the school's actions) for being a bunch of Monday Morning Quarterbacks.

The President of the school explained to the press people that students on their way to class can't check e-mails or aren't listening to radios. But people kept asking the same stupid questions about why they didn't try to inform them.

yeah the email thing 2 hours later is ridiculous..

The Press Sgt. of our University Police department sends out e-mails to make us aware of attacks/assaults on campus and sometimes include sketches of the suspect. These never get sent out as quickly as 2 hours, and have never turned into huge massacres. We've had every kind of attack, from murders(shooting and stabbing), rapes, and car-jackings. So I don't see how the VT authorities or staff were supposed to know the original shooting was not an isolated incident.

This is a tragedy, and the only person to blame escaped punishment by taking their own life. Time to look for a scapegoat...:nonono:

I don't even know what to say.. I sat there in shock just that stuff like this is still happening. It makes me cringe each time I hear about it [I'm a college student myself] and I don't even wanna think about it. I honestly do not know what I would do if I was in that type of situation. We all say things that we would do, but if it actually happened.. Idk.

..dude im just glad youre ok.

I have my alarm clock set to the local news radio station and this morning i was still half asleep when i heard about the "incident" as they were calling it at virginia tech.

I immediately remembered that you went to that school...i was like hope hes alright.

**** like this is retarted:nonono:

I see your points man. And I agree that if the law abiding students had a gun, that MF would have been stopped REAL fast. The way the laws are now, the CRIMINAL gets the advantage. Like you said, there wouldn't be 30 + dead if one of them had a gun with them.

As to blaming the school, I think there should be a BETTER way to alert. :nonono: Loud speakers NOT just "silent" email. I agree with you and 66, we should not focus on bashing the school but we should IMPROVE the warning system because this is now an epidemnic. Trust me, if those kids were one of your kids, you would be looking for a BETTER WAY. Email doesn't cut it.

Thanks Eric.

The University I attend has alarms and a PA system for terrorist attacks and incidents like this. The problem is that the systems do no good if there is no reason to sound the alarms.
No one could have possibly known that the first shooting would've led to the mass shooting across campus. Some people could've guessed, but it would've been just that...a guess. There are a helluva lot of isolated incidents that occur on campuses across the country that don't lead to mass shootings. People even watch reports of such incidents on the news, and dismiss them as nothing. But the second a single incident leads to a secondary incident it becomes common sense that the single incident was some kind of warning? I just don't get it.

You either sound the sirens everytime something happens and let the sirens lose their significance, or wait until you're entirely sure you need the sirens before you sound them.
I think they waited, they couldn't possibly have known, and now they're gonna have to answer questions for Monday Morning Quarterbacks.

Trust me, if those kids were one of your kids, you would be looking for a BETTER WAY.

Not uncommon, for victims or family of victims to be totally irrational. Unfortunately, the same can be said for members of the media.

I've been watching coverage throughout the day starting at 1pm. Funny the media reported, 21 dead, 22 dead, 30 dead, then 33 dead. The first shooting involved the gunman's girlfriend, then it didn't. The information changed SO much thoughout the day from 1pm to now(12:51 AM).
If the media can't get the information right in 12 hours, why do they expect the University officials to get the information perfect and make the perfect decision in 2 hours?

I agree entirely. The media is always looking for a scapegoat they can place the blame on without thinking rationally that this probably could not have been prevented without having some sort of military intelligence team on-campus at all universities and colleges at all times, which is obviously not realistically possible.
