Pypes Mid Muffler System

anybody running one? any issues or anything? the only thing that really concerns me is the muffler being so close to the gas tank, is this something to really worry about? and finally, does it sound anything like the older cars? i know Ford did their homework on these new cars, but they left a lot to be desired when it comes to exhaust sound. pics would be great too...thanks!

You know, I really don't understand our sound issues with the S197s:shrug: It was up until last week that I was thinking it is the new muffler location that changed our sound. Perhaps it is only different from inside the car. Now that the mufflers are located just behind the bumper cover perhaps most of us are under the impression that they sound very different from the previous body styles. It wasn't until last week when a late model Camaro passed me on the interstate when it hit me. It sounded very deep and "rumbly" while having its single muffler located...directly behind the bumper cover. Why wouldn't the S197s be near the same? Perhaps that would be a ? for Jenn to possibly answer. If she's been in a newer GT with aftermarket exhaust to compare to her Trans Am.

I would also like to know about the sound. I think our cars sound great then you are in the pedal or just holding the RPM's over 3K. That is just a small part of driving it though and the older fox bodies with some after market exhaust work just sound mean all the time.
Just to bump the thread, anyone running these please post some sound clips and give us your thoughts. Don't forget to add what changes it made to interior sound, some of us drive our cars on a daily basis over distances of more than 30 miles one way while enjoying that great shaker 500/1000 stereo!

Hey if you have a sound clip, do share. I would like to hear this system. I wonder how it would sound with the Pypes O/R H Pipe?

It would make a complete Pypes exhaust system except for the Headers. Any clue how big the Tips are on this system?

5.7 vs 4.6 maybe?

i personally think the biggest reason is pushrods versus modular engines. pushrod engines will most of the time make way more noise, at least that has been my experience. i am not really up to speed on these modulars, we just own one. i haven't tinkered with it at all, and probably won't, except for exhaust sound. i would love to have more power, but let's be honest, on the highway or backroads, the factory horsepower is plenty. and it's all anyone needs. but i would love to hear this mid muffler system, preferably with an off road h/x pipe. if it sounds how i think it should, that will be the next system on our car...

How has the in car sound changed? I have talked to a few people that say the wrong combo will drive you nuts on the highway and just get so loud when your on it that the stereo becomes pointless. Is your combo much louder and do you drive on the highway at speed very long?

yeah 87, is there any drone inside the car? right now, we are running stingers with the everything else stock, and it sucks at around 2000-2300 rpms, it rings so bad inside. we got back from Mustang Week yesterday in the car, and i swore i was changing the exhaust once i got back, so now i am shopping around. right now, it is down to the off road x pipe, and either the Pypes mid muffler system, or maybe GTA's, or MAC's. but i will be using an x pipe, that is for sure. i like a little raspy...

There is no drone at all. Also its quiet at low rpm(like cruising) but when you rump on it really loud and clean sound.Honestly take my word for it there is absolutally no drone at all.I had my car for 1 year now and waited and reasearch until I found this system.I personally know Steve Baur& his family(editor of MM&FF)lives couple of miles from I and he can tell you its awesome.Going to see about putting in MM&FF article.

I was also looking to get this mid-muffler system. It's cheap and looks real nice. I was just worried about the drone... With my offroad Pypes X pipe and Magnaflow full bodied mufflers, there is NO drone at all, and it sounds really awesome... Just looking for something different now.

I have Same offroad Pypes X pipe also & my neighbor has offroad Pypes X pipe and Magnaflow axel backs and it's quieter and sound alot different than mine.He is actually ordering Pypes midmuffler system also because he likes my system better. But like I told him I also have longtubes.

I have this system on order and it is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. Should have it installed within the next week or so, along with the C&L racer intake & XCal2 w/ Brenspeed tunes on the way.

After owning both an '04 and an '06 GTO, I am a firm believer in the difference between a mid-muffler and rear-muffler system. The '04 GTO had mufflers in the middle of the car, with pipes running the rest of the way out the back. The '05/'06 Goats had the mufflers right at the back, just like the S197 Stangs. Stock for stock, the '04 sounded 10x better than my '06. Modded, my '04 sounded 100x better than the '06. So, that is why I jumped all over the Pypes system when I found it. All of the sound clips I found of S197's with rear-mounted muffs sounded OK at start-up, but not that great when revved or WOT - just like w/ the GTO's. The rear-mounted systems just sound like they are choking up or get "chuffy" sounding when revved. The best systems I ever heard on the '05/'06 Goats were custom systems with the muffs in the middle of the car - so I expect the Stang will also benefit from such a placement.

If I can manage to get some clips taken, I will post them up for y'all. The ones on Pypes website sold me...so if you want to hear the system just go to their website.

Cheers!

Curious, where did you order it from, and how long to deliver?

Hi! I ordered mine from RPM Outlet. They have it for $299.95 with free UPS ground shipping. However, UPS would not deliver it w/o a signature, so I will not be able to receive it until Monday of next week when I am off work.:bang: I was looking forward to seeing it and posting up some pics. Will do as soon as it comes in, though.

RPM Outlet is in TX and I am in AR, so the shipping only took a couple of days and it was free - can't beat that!:nice:

Cheers!
