Flowmaster vs Magnaflow mufflers

Not sure why all the hatred towards the 50-series Flowmasters. My wife's 427 'vette has them and it sounds perfect. Not too loud, not too tame, which it sounds like what you're after. I'd take them any day over Magnaflows, but to each his own...

I agree. I started with Flo-Pros(flomaster knock offs) 12 years ago and hated them. 2 years ago I switched to a set of Magnaflows and it was better but the car just didn't sound quite right..........

I didn't like 40 series Flomasters because they were going to be to loud and every car I knew had them had drone issues.

This year I switched to 50 series Flowmasters. I was a little worried that I would neuter the sound of an over cammed 302, but the 50s are perfect. They have the right sound, no drone, just as loud as the magna's at idle and I can hold a conversation going down the road, barely.

The Magnas sound great on new cars with an x pipe, but the just sounded a little tinny with my h pipe.

Most people that like SlowMasters are the people that like them because they make the car sound a lot meaner then it is.

pfft they're mufflers, until someone shows me a dyno where they compare the two back to back without changing a single other thing you'll never get me to buy that its even a double digit difference in horsepower. and my car can finally back up the flowmaster's bark, woot :)

Anyone else have (or want to make) some recordings of older cars with the Magnaflows or 50 series Flows (like I said, didn't think too much of them on my buddy's 455 buick but no reason not to keep an open mind if someone has a clip to listen to)?

I installed the 2 1/2" Flowmaster system on mine behind shorty headers and and H pipe. I have it run all the way to the back throught the GT valance. They are not as loud as I thought they would be, but I installed a lot of sound deadening.

I had previously installed $1000 worth of stereo items, now sometimes I don't even turn it on, I just listen to the stereo exhaust.

Not to hijack my own htread, but I may be asking you about how you installed that system. My next major project will probably taking the $1000/2000 W peak sound system out of my Cadillac and putting it into the Mustang (won't happen for a while)... need advice on sound deadening, ensuring the whole car doesn't just rattle to no end, getting an alternator that can power it, etc.

Official request for sound clip of Vette here :D

I cant say which is "better" as I have never had a flowmaster system but I have a Magnaflow system with an X pipe. I cant say enough about the sound and have even had a guy tell me he thought it was a new cobra pulling up behind him. I do believe though that the X over H is much better way to go. But thats just my .02

Also, a clip of your car would be nice. I don't plan on swapping my pipes out though.. they're only a few years old and in fine shape. So the Hpipe will have to stay

There have been test done, numerous times that show flowmasters hurt power, sometimes severely depending on the combination of things. Just like an x-pipe sometimes does more harm that good. On a light build though, I doubt much would be noticed. I know on my car, chambered mufflers is quite a difference in just seat of the pants and off throttle response. The Magnaflows def had more low end feel power wise than my chambered mufflers did. (this coming from someone that likes chambered mufflers sound better)

I have some old two chamber flowmasters on my 66 fastback. bought them back in the mid 90s. they are still in great shape and the sound is great! my trick 331 just seems to love them. 6 to 7000rpm it sounds like the gates of hell are wide open! magnaflows are for girls.

I rest my case.

I agree that the 40 series sounds the best. That is what I have for my 65. I have a super 40 on my F150. I just thought that if he preferred the Flowmaster sound that 50 series would be a little quieter. A friend of mine has them on his 70 Mustang with 302. They sound pretty good.

no case to rest.

the best motors deserve the best mufflers.

flowmaster.

sounds like a commercial:D

and ps

mr hive, gets some real mufflers!:Zip2:

So what you are saying is that a muffler that is proven time and again that it will lead to lower performance when compaired to another muffler is a better muffler ?

You do know that HP and torque stats don't work like golf scores right ?

the flowmasters i have are an old school version. far better than the curent ones for sale and any magnaflow.

all i can say in defense is my motor was built to run with a low restrictive exhaust system. my old flowmasters do the trick and sound very nice.

take this for what it is worth.

ps, i do not like golf!

engine has the COMP Cams THUMPR camshaft... 10.6:1 compression. I could of went with the Big MUTHA THUMPR, but this car is just for the street and this engine eats too much gas as is. I'll need to hear some FlowMasters to know what smack you all are talking about.:D peace.
