No takers on these?

Q) Where were the production pace cars assembled (this one should be easy)?

Q) What unique feature in a real (production) pace cars vin # identifies it as such?

Q) What transmission did the actual race prepped pace cars use? - greensvt21 gave this one in his full description of the 3 race prepped pace cars. - A) Modified C-4

the production pace cars where built on San Jose, California and Dearborn, Michigain.

I'm totally stumped on the second one.

I'm going to do some 1993 Cobra R questions over the next few days for those that may be interested in those.

1. the 93 cobra r was called a pull ahead model, why(don't list the equiptment that will come later just the reason for this nick name)?

2. what was the body/chassis changes over the regular 93 cobra?

We have a winner!
Not only where the production pace cars built in San Jose, CA. (Assy Code =R) and Dearborn, MI. (Assy. Code = F), all mustangs built from 1979 - 1981 came from both plants.

This leads a bit into the next answer.

All 1979 pace cars VIN's have a distinctive 2 character series. The six digit consecutive unit number that is part of every mustangs VIN begins with the numbers "48" these are the only numbers that will appear as the 6th & 7th characters in an authentic pace car's VIN. (EX. 9R03F480000).

For all production cars including pace cars built from 1979 - 1981 it is possible for 2 cars to have the same consecutive unit number in their VIN the only difference being the single digit code that specifies what plant it was built at. So both of these examples could be authentic VIN's - 9R03F480001, 9F03F480001

One that I saw asked, but not answered:

Years for T-Top mustangs: 83-88.5

Now, here's my question (Keeping it T-Top)

How did T-Top Mustangs differ in regards to the interior vs regular hard top Mustangs?

How many T-Top Mustangs were produced?

What was the only stylistic change between the 87 & 88 T-Top Mustangs?

Only interior differences other than the obvious head liner I'm aware of are - factory tinted windows and remote right hand mirror mandatory.

Total production I've never found conclusive numbers for T-Tops even the total produced in 1988 is not confirmed but a Ford source listed in one of my more reliable reference books said approximately 800 in 1988.

Only style change from 1987 - 1988 that I recently learned for sure was the body mounted stalk style mirrors used on the convertible starting with that years production.

So there are my guesses.

2. what was the body/chassis changes over the regular 93 cobra?

1) Called a pull ahead model because several of the components used for the R model where 1994 production parts.

2) Cobra R had the extra wide rocker sill panel add-on normally found on convertibles with special reinforcement plates at both ends of the sills.
Front strut towers are joined to the top of the firewall below the cowl with a triangular steel "export" brace.
Under the car 2 separate K-member V-braces arranged in an "X" pattern fastened at the radiator support and to the rocker sill plates, the same brace used on Fox & SN-95 V-8 convertibles.
Along with various structural reinforcements and gussets fitted to help support the cowl and dashboard areas.

WHATS SSP?
Special Service Package
1982 = Severe Service Package
1983+ = Special Service Package

What years where the carbed 2.3 turbo motors produced and what models got them?
Production was '79 through '82 ('79 through mid-'81 in the US, '79 through '82 in Canada). The carb'd 2.3T was standard in the Cobra package and optional in all other models, including the Pace Car ('79) and the GT in '82 (again, Canada only).

What was the first year of the T5 trans?
A few months after the 1983 model year started.

A few months after the '84 model year started. The Thunderbird Turbocoupe actually had them a year earlier.

There was no "White Magic". There was an advertisement for the Black Magic painted Polar White(paint code 9D) and the title of the ad was "White Lightning". But it was still called "Black Magic".

So you could get a Black Magic painted 1C (Black) or 9D (Polar White).

....

3. 3,798

Total production figures for the Turbo GT (hatchback in '83, hatchback and convertible in '84) have been published in various venues but the numbers have not been confirmed by Ford.

Nope. See above.

T-roof production totals or for any individual year are not known. The "approximately 800" for 1988 is noted in that book as unconfirmed.

None. Some may say 1987 but MustangGT.org has a handful registered with 3.27.

I'll take a stab at some of them..

4. 221 V8

6. 1978 king cobra had stickers

7. Fox was 1972 ford world car project code name.

8. 351W used in the Torino

9. 1979 optional, standard in the '79 pace car, optional in '81 & '82.

10. 6.75" rearend

13. medium red & black

14. 1983

15. 1987, '88 & '89

4. Correct, if we're talking about the "Windsor family". I didn't specify I was asking about the Mustang only. The 221 was not in the Mustang. The 255 was the smallest V8 in the Mustang ('80-'82).

6. Correct. There was a "5.0" sticker on either side of the hood scoop.

7. Yes, the Fox project was born around early '73 but the name "Fox" was derived from which specific make and model of that era?

8. Correct. A lot of people think it was a "marine" cam but it was not. It was from a 1973 351W 2V Ford Torino.

9. Recaro seating was standard equipment in the '79 PC and not optional in any other Mustang in that year. It was optional in '80, 81, and lastly in '82.

10. Correct. Not sure exactly which Fox engines got the 6.75" rear but I believe it was the 2.8L V6 and 3.3L I6. The turbo 2.3 and V8s did not use the 6.75" rear.

13. Correct. And the '82 GT could get Recaro seating in Black only. (Recaro was not available in Red in any year Fox.)

14. Correct. The early '84 GT/Turbo GT also did not have foglamps.

15. Black was also not available in '84, '85, or '86.
