Startup noise -- not much mentioned tapping

I did a quick search and browsed the TSBs and came up with nothing. The noise sounds like it is coming from the within the dashboard (or at the firewall) on the driver's side -- it sounds like a grind, like a child's wind-up toy would make. This noise only occures for a second or two and only happens when the temperature is below 40 degrees F (only happens on initial startup). Also, I noticed that the noise occurs before the tach begins to read engine RPM. Any clues as to what the problem(s), if any, are appreciated.

I haven't noticed that particular noise, but I do notice that my car sounds completely different when it is below 40° outside. Despite the fact that I'm totally stock, I find that the engine is much deeper and raspy in cold temps, and sounds more like sixties iron than a modern day car.

As far as an odd ticking on cold start up, my first theory would be valves/cams. Maybe check on your oil viscosity for your area. Other than that, I can't think of anything.... perhaps someone else more experienced can chime in here.

is it a similar sound to when the guages wind down when you turn off the key? if you dont know what that sounds like, turn off your radio, then turn off the key. you can hear a sound similar to an oven timer.

mine sonetimes makes that noise when cold.

I hear that noise in mine as well. Without the engine running, just turn the key to on and you can hear it. I also hear it when the key is turned off. Sounds like it is coming from the tach area. Anyone know what it is? Is it normal and not a problem?
