Progress Thread Drag Week Progress Thread

So here is some of the wiring i encountered. Unfortunately, holley does not offer any true plug and play systems for a coil on plug setup besides the LSx engines. So i had to dig into the harness and add 9 pins. 8 were for ECU signal to each of the coils, and 1 ECU ground. I also had to tie into the holley ignition harness and wire the cam and crank sensors in.

Here is my list of the major things to do 6 weeks before DragWeek…
85200.gif

There was a lot of other things i missed on this list, wiring the trailer lights on the car, packing all the stuff for the trailer, buying and mounting new slicks, getting my NHRA competition license so i could legally run 9's…

So here is the motor in the car
85201.gif

This was after i finished most of the wiring
85203.gif

And here is the final product, I had to add a vacuum canister because the camshaft and the power brakes weren't playing nice together.

I also had to remove the vacuum pump when it started pulling way too much oil out of the valve cover fitting. I was worried about damaging the pump and didn't have time to diagnose the problem, so i removed the pump and installed my moroso catch can from the little motor.

This was all done in a mad thrash to get my license. I had decided that if i didn't get my competition license there would be no point in going to drag week and not running the car to its full potential(assuming it would even run 9's at all). I had been working on the car nonstop for a month, and every night i would get 3-5 hrs of sleep, go work my 8 hour day, run for parts at lunch time and go home and dot it all over again. The car/motor was pretty much fighting me every step of the way and this engine required some custom steps that were much easier to figure out on paper…….

One of the days that was a real turning point was when i was under the car tightening the transmission bolts up, i had a 1/2" ratchet with a ton of extensions on it, and a swivel socket. The wrench slipped, fell right on my head, it hurt, bad. I rolled off the creeper, put the backside of my hand on my head to block the light, i was planning on just laying on the cold floor till my head stopped hurting, and finishing up that last bolt. When i moved my hand off my forehead, i noticed it had more blood on it than i was comfortable seeing. Im a big pansy when it comes to blood BTW, so i went inside, told my lady i was bleeding, she looked at me like i had a hole in my head, told me to go sit in the bathroom, and don't look in the mirror. I knew things weren't good, it wouldn't stop bleeding, and she thought i might need a stitch.

It was about 9:30 at night, i called my aunt who is a nurse and works the night shift up(she is out of work right now due to the fact that she was recently diagnosed with cancer and at the time was recovering from surgery and waiting to start chemotherapy). We went over there, she hooked me up with two butterfly bandages, and finally the cut had stopped bleeding. Now here is where the turning point comes in… My aunt was my only family member that ever listened to my crazy scheme of going to dragweek. Everyone else i had told in my family about this thought i was crazy for doing it, and the money it was going to cost, and what if the car breaks… blah blah, you get the point.

Not my Aunt though, she was always psyched on the idea. At this point, it is 3 weeks before i have to leave for kentucky, i have about 1 week to get the car running and make 6 license passes, overnight the paperwork to the NHRA, then ask them very nicely to rush my paperwork so i can have a paper copy of my license in time. I still don't have a running car, i don't know if the car will overheat, i don't know how I'm going to get the exhaust done, no trailer hitch mount, etc etc. I felt like the odds were stacked against me, and i told my aunt i was probably not going to make it for all of these reasons. She just stops me in my tracks, says no way, you HAVE to go, you will have the time of your life, you just gotta do it. So that was what really lit the fire under my ass to get this thing done, and if it wasn't for her, i may have thrown the towel in and gave up. I may not have made it to dragweek if i didn't drop that wrench on my head.

Sorry for the longwinded post, but i can't guarantee it will be the last in this thread...

@90lxcoupe congrats on the win! Also congrats on being the only Ford-powered Fox to win, haha. It was nice to see Foxes so well represented, but hopefully next year we see more with the right engines in them. :D I bet some of those HRM staffers were cringing every time a Fox car won- that's a great mag, but they seem to dislike anything that isn't a first gen Mustang.

Anyway, good job showing up and walking away with a win on your first try, that's a pretty big deal.

Thanks buddy, they really love to hate fox bodies in the mag for sure, i was surprised i got as much ink as i did. Thats ok though, i had a blast and winning my class was just icing on the cake.

Very very cool! Congratulations on your accomplishment. Sounds like it was everything you hoped for and you had a great time. Again well done sir. And I hope your aunt is doing better(don't care about your head...it's obviously to hard to get hurt by a wrench) I am extremely motivated to get my car done by spring 15' after this

At this point i think i took a night off, figured out and ordered the correct cam sync, and did some of the random stuff like get a serpentine belt, figure out the radiator hose, and some more of the little tedious stuff. I got the car running on a friday afternoon, drove it for about 10 miles, it was like 90º and humid as all hell and the car didn't overhead, GREAT, that was a huge weight off my shoulders, I was running out of money and that bigger radiator and dual spal fans were definitly out of the budget.

So i loaded up the car friday night, with no hood, and made the trip to Lebanon Valley Dragway to try and get my 6 licensing passes done. The way it works is you make 4 moderate passes, and run the car out a little more on each pass, the 5th and 6th pass are full 1/4 mile runs and must be under 10.00 seconds or faster than 135mph to qualify for the license. On the 4th pass i ran the car about 100 feet past the 1/8th mile mark, and coasted. I got the slip, 10.2x at like 102mph or something. The sixty foot was also very promising on what i thought was a slightly soft launch. I was wicked excited at this point. I was very confident that the car would go 9's after a 10.2 coasting. So the next pass i went up and got after it a little more on the launch, the car hung the wheels higher and further than it ever has, the pass felt great. It went a 1.349 sixty foot and a 9.86 at 136mph. On the last license pass one of the newer guys was bringing me into the water box, i didn't realize he stopped me in the water box till i was already doing my burnout. I overcompensated and killed the tires, which caused the tires to spin slightly right after the car hooked. I still went a 9.96 at 136mph, and luckily was able to get all my paperwork to the NHRA in time.

Here is a video of that pass…

Here is also a video of the car on the chassis dyno. I put down 528rwhp. I don't recall the torque number.

Thank you, my aunt is doing very well all things considered. It is hard to watch family have these kind of issues, but she is a trooper, she has had a few complications with her chemo port, but that is all fixed now and she is taking everything in stride, she has a great attitude and i think that is key in situations like this. I have a small scar behind my eyebrow, I'm ok with it, chicks dig scars. :) Glad to hear you can get some motivation from my story. Ill be posting the drag week pictures and video next.

on the nitrous car we ran a moroso catch can right on the valve cover with 2 90* AN fittings to help keep oil in the valve cover. then out of the can it goes to the vac pump then to 2 breather cans.

I talked with star machine about the problem a few weeks ago, they told me if i had any oil leaks the pump would draw oil into the separator can. The valley plate on the intake was leaking pretty bad after the motor came off the dyno. I am fixing that leak by welding the valley plate to the manifold and that should take care of the pump pulling oil. I didnt do it much on the engine dyno so i think just taking care of that major oil leak will fix it.

you can kinda see what we did off the driver valve cover. that motor had to have a regulator put on it to lower the vac pressure down. it was sealed tight other then that but it would still suck oil out of the valve cover.

I did actually catch that i think. That really sucks man. Glad to see the damage was relatively minimal thought. When do you think it will be ready? I am thinking i really want to make it to the NMRA MIR race this year.

It's all in the name of the game, 138 to the 1/8 on an easy pass was good new though. I've made a host of changes with the motor and my get into the x275 field, time will tell. I'll be at MIR for sure come NMRA time!

To continue the story from post 46...

After i completed the license passes i had one thing left to figure out with the car, the hood. The CHI 4.0 intake is massive. I had severely underestimated this during the build of the motor and wish i would have went with a 2828 edelbrock manifold. Hindsight is 20/20 though, my decision was to cut as small of a hole in the hood as i could. I didn't want a 6" cowl hood on my street car and this was, in my eyes, the best solution at the time. I sent the car to the guys that painted it and here is the end result. It looks better than i thought it would have, but i am taking steps to getting the air filter back under the hood this winter and am also going to convert to a 4500 flange throttle body.
Here is the finished product.

So thats it, that was basically the two months leading up to dragweek, and now, here's where the real fun starts. We left friday night around 11pm from MA to go to KY. It was a 16hr drive with no stops. I took the first shift of driving, and was hoping to make it till about 2 or 3am before i had to switch. Well, 45 minutes into the drive I'm getting sleepy, by 12:30 i am nodding off. We swap drivers, i pass out almost immediately, the previous month of 3-5hrs of sleep had finally caught up with me. My co-driver Jesse wakes me up at about 6am, tells me he needs to stop, and asks if i want to drive. Still half asleep i tell him to just park it at the next stop, we sleep on the side of the road for about 2 more hours, i wake up, and drive the rest of the way to KY. We arrived at the hotel at about 5:30pm.

I feel like I've been pretty long winded here, so ill get on with the pictures…
Hanging out in the tech line

Dave Ahokus' Jerry Bickel built pro mod… Say what you want about this car, but the man driving it was 70 years old and made it 1100 miles in 95-100 degree weather with ridiculous humidity.

Crossing the Mississippi

Here are some action shots of my car

One of the most challenging parts of dragweek is obviously the drives. HRM gives you directions and you must follow the route. You need photo evidence that you stopped at the checkpoints, here are a few of the checkpoints.

Cool Hotel parking lot shot

This is pretty much the scene in the parking lots every night. This was on Thursday night after everyone made it back safe from driving thru one of the craziest rainstorms I've ever seen. Lightning actually struck the timing system at the track and delayed friday's racing for almost 3 hours.

Final average for the week

Fun Fact…

The HotRod page

After I got home from dragweek, i made one pass where the car actually hooked. I went to shift 4th, and missed a gear, then the clutch was mush. I limped the car onto the trailer, and this is what i found.

Launch pic from said pass…
