Supercharged 01 GT or Stock 04 Cobra?

Have you thought about a leftover, or slightly used 03 Cobra. It may not be "brand new", but it's a Cobra none the less. You could probably get a pretty smokin deal on a 03. Then you'd have some money for mods.
Just a thought.

Check the insurance, I had no problem paying for a new 2003 Cobra after I
sold my racing operation in 2002, but I could not justfy to myself or my wife paying 2-3 times more for insurance over the GT. With added insurance premuim added up over the years you could probably have a 8 second daily driver!

I say stick with the GT. Youve already got it supercharged, you really dont need to get all that much more stuff for it. Unless your planning on paying cash for a cobra outright its going to cost you alot to upgrade. For one thing, your going to get RAPED if you trade in your GT. Used car market is horrible with 0% financing on most cars these days. Also, cobra is like 10k more at least then a GT, so if your making payments, add on at least $300 more a month for car payment above what your paying now. Of course if your wealthy already and paying cash, or keeping the GT, I guess it doesnt matter!
Good comments. Freaked me out to see an OSU deal in your sig from MI.....
My undergrad is from OSU and is always neat to see the scarlett and gray on
a MI sig! Mark

I think the insurance is the wild card here. A friend of mine sold his 03 Cobra because his insuance was like 3 grand a year. I know from owning two mustangs that the insurance companies get confused with all the different levels of performance with the mustangs. Make sure you give them the VIN and them let them give you a quote based on that.

I would stick with the GT...in the end you'll get a cobra that will have better resale but the dealer is going to take you out back and give you anal rape on your trade in especially considering the money you've already put in it. Its not hard to make a GT get in the 11's either...especially with the new KB kits putting out 400+ hp right out of the box.

In some ways the GT is built more for drag racing than a cobra so if you want to drag and also have a streetable car you can do it well with a GT.

ditto...I got raped one time on my old 98GT...that was enough...I won't make the same mistake anymore...keep the GT..slap a KB

Man I can relate to this thread ! I went through the exact same thing before I bought my Cobra but in my case I really wanted a Cobra and I knew that no matter how much I modded my GT (and I modded it a lot blower, shaker, suspension ect...) that I would never be happy till I had the 03 Cobra. When the rebate came out and I had a dealer willing to go a little over invoice I could not hold back and so I got the Cobra and sold my GT on E-bay (no way was I going to get raped on the trade-in by the dealer) Ok so I lost $$$ on my GT, but in the end I am very glad that I got the Cobra and my insurance did not go up very much. And I say if you really do want a Cobra don't put anymore $$$ into your GT and go get the Cobra :nice: Anyway that is my .02

I think you should keep your gt. I would be extremely happy just to have a supercharger under the hood of my slower gt. I respect someones car more if they build it from scratch and don't just go out and buy something already fast. I'm sure your 01 is pretty quick how it is and if you eventually wanted to get a forged longblock it would last a long time even under more boost. I think it would be awesome to take a supercharged gt to the track and beat 03 cobras that are modded because they will have to give you props for kicking their 4v butt when you only have a 2v. Good luck.

My insurance went from around $4 a day to $5 a day when I traded the GT for the Cobra. It was worth it to me, cause I drive the heck out of the car. I don't drag race regularly, so losing the solid axle wasn't a problem. My new IRS and differential bushings have reduced the wheel hop, however. Still, I won't be dropping the clutch at 4000rpm at the track.
The Cobra will definitely cost you more up front and maybe a lot in insurance too. However, I can slap on a Kenne Bell and make 500+rwhp with nothing but a retune.
I would have built my GT if I had the area to work, another car and tools to work with. It was easier for me to spend the money up front on a cobra, though. For street use the Cobra is both comfortable and kick arse. I guess it really depends on your situation.

I garantee you that its EXTREMELY rare for insurance not to ATLEAST double when you go from a GT to a cobra.

I guarantee to you it's not.

My insurance from a 2002 GT ( actually a 360R but they didnt know ) to a 2003 Cobra only went up $90 a month.. considering my insurance already was $300 a month.. that isnt THAT bad..

and Im 18.

  Why so high? I'm looking to get into an 03/04 Cobra myself, but those insurance rates are outrageous and would crush my hopes of ever getting one. :(

I'm 20 with a spotless driving record

i should rephrase what i said. IF your not already gettin raped from insurance on a regular Gt...i pay 66 a month and 90 more would be 1.4x what im paying already ;)
