Sagging seat belts! Anyone else have this problem?

This problem has agitated me for a while now. I called Ford to see how much to replace them, ($$$)! I pulled out the panels today to see what I could do with them, and found the problem. The roller has only one bolt holding it on and after years of use, the roller twists and this causes the belt to track off to one side and hang up. To solve the problem just twist the roller assembly to where the belt tracks evenly. Problem solved!! :nice:

Welcome to the club. It's not that there is only one bolt. That's all there should be. The re-wind springs in the housing start to wear after a while, and the next thing you know, it's starting to twist. I've gone through three on the driver's side, and one on the passenger. Either deal with it, or get a set of harnesses!

Every time I get out of my car (or a passenger) I move the move the piece (on the floor) back. That takes some pressure off the spring while I'm not driving. I've also stopped putting my seat belts through the loops on the top of the seat. That also puts constant pressure on the spring while you're not driving.

I'm just trying to get the most miles I can out of this POS seat belt design.

Trust me guys, this mod does work. I did it 4 months ago and have zero belt sag! I also pulled the belt out of the roller, spun the roller one turn and replaced the belt. This increased the spring pressure in the roller assembly. To keep the roller bracket from shifting again you can probably drilla hole and put in a sheet-metal screw to hold it in place.

I'm dropping my car off at Ford tonight and told them to fix the seat belts while doing an oil change. alldata.com/recalls shows a safety recall :
2. 99S26 OCT 99 Recall - Safety Belt Retractor Inspection/Replacement

I figure they may fix it then, even though I'm out of warranty since it's a safety recall.

JonJon, let me know if they fix it.

Think it'll work on 97s, too??
