1993 Cobra.......Should I Buy it????

I posted this in the SVT forum but haven't recieved any help yet, But it's a 5.0 Cobra So I though you all might be able to help.......

I've been looking for another mustang and have come acrossed a 1993 Cobra, I've owned about ten mustangs over the last few years most of them Vintage but I have owned a few Fox body GT's and have wrenched on a bunch of them..........

I really don't know jack about these 93 cobras, Are they build by the SVT???? How do they differ from the plain jane GT's besides the body differences????? Like engine specs and such???

I was looking into a Used SVT Focus with plans of adding a turbo, But this 93 cobra may be a better investment. Do you think????

I know they had diffrent injectors and i think they had a more open intake im not sure what else they came with that was diffrent.

GT40 heads..cobra upper and lower, 24 lb injectors and a terrible computer. But yes, its the best fox body ever built in my book..SVT was born from this car. They drive nice. Rated at 235 hp from Ford, but its closer to 265. If you can, and are serious, its certainly worth driving to see if it fits you. 4 lug with disc brakes as well...good luck :nice:

The cam was very slightly milder for a broad flat torque curve & massive low rpm torque. You could always swap it for an aftermarket grind. 3.25 gears instead of the pathetic 2.73s & 3.08s in the gt's. They also had softer springs for better handling, yes I did say better. Mustang or Focus, gee that's not a tough choice for me. I currently own 2 stangs, 1 F150, 1 Escort GT & the Focus looks like a ford ricer. I'd jump on it like it was the Olsen twins, don't flame me they can vote now.

It's an investment if you keep it stock. ;)
or if you keep all the stock parts neatly packaged up and stored away :p

The Cobra cam is a 5.0 Thunderbird cam. Its got the 1.7 roller rockers and the 70mm mass air meter. Also the gears are not 3.25s they are 3.08s. The clutch is different, the front springs are softer, the rear swaybar is stiffer, the shocks are softer. I think thats about it aside from the cosmetics, and what everyone else named. Oh yeah the fuel pump is slight bigger too, it was 95 or 110lph I cant remember.

scuse me, I meant 3.27. 3.25 was an optional gear in 8" Stang rears when I was little:)

If you buy it it's your car, do what you will with it. Let some collector cuss you out 20yrs from now because you painted over some marker dab on the back side of your headlights if they really need to. Take it from a friend of mine who owns a REAL, unrestored, small block AC Cobra he bought new "Flog the piss out of it; that's what it was made for". He say's that it would be an insult to Carrol Shelby if he parked it on a mirror & stared at it. Would you marry a beatiful woman & never touch her?

I'm not here to offend collectors, restorers, or show car guy's. I'm just encouraging you to do your own thing.

I'm the original owner of a '93 Cobra. They came with 3.08 gears, 3.27s were optional only on 5.0/AOD Mustang GT/LX. They did NOT have a T5-Z, they had a special, Cobra-only T5 that had stock ratios (3:35 low) but with phosphate coated gears and a tapered roller input bearing. They had a special hardened front yoke on the otherwise regular 5 speed drive shaft. They had 65mm throttle body, 70mm mass air sensor but with a "bridge" that cut it down to about a 60 or so. Cam was developed for the Cobra, but Ford liked it enough to use it in the '93 Thunderbirds as well. It wasn't as aggressive by itself as a GT/LX cam, but the factory Crane roller 1:7s made it a little more so. Springs were regular 5.0 GT/LX in front, 4 cylinder LX hatch in rear - stock 5.0 rear sway bar and a thinner front bar. Shocks and struts were special with different valving. The idea was to get the suspension to move a little more, and get a better ride while improving cornering at the same time with the (big deal at the time) 17" wheels. Brakes were 4 wheel disc - stock size in front but with special rotors with a taller hat for the wheels, which had more backspacing, rear axles and brakes from the '87-'88 T bird Turbo Coupe but without the ABS stuff. These T-bird axles were wider than Mustang, which is why Cobras have special wheels with deeper backspacing. Master cylinder, booster, and lines were special for the car. None of them had cruise control. They had special mufflers and a unique cat back system to clear the rear valence. The Cobra computer works fine, my car is blown and tuned without a chip, just an FMU, adjustable regulator, and a Pro-M mass air and it works fine. You hear all kinds of stuff about timing retard at certain speeds and that it doesn't like mods, but I've never had a problem with it. I even run a '93 Cobra computer, mass air, and 24s in a '65 Ranchero with no problems. There were smaller differences as well, like a special heater tube array without the nipple for coolant feed to the EGR spacer, as the Cobra intake had a built-in spacer and didn't need the coolant feed, totally unique body kit and rear spoiler, grille opening with horse, (the only Fox to have a running horse in the grille) and parts bin '84-'86 Mustang SVO taillights. The '93 Cobra was far and away the best Fox Mustang, it was a nicely engineered package that felt smoother and better in just about every way than a regular 5.0. Many '93 Cobras are still in great shape with low miles, as they were generally cared for a bit better than GTs and LXs, and if you can get one of these, you won't be disappointed. I say go for it - it's a rare, low volume, high performance car that will always have value in the marketplace, and it's fun to be in something a little different.

I'm not going to make a second quote of what cjshelby typed, but that's exactly how it is. Sure 50 years from now a totally stock '93 Cobra with 1000 miles on it will be super rare and worth gobs of money, but most of us will be pretty old in 50 years, or at least old enough that it's a little unlikely that we'll be racing anymore. I for one would beat the piss out of it if i had one, but i'd put love and money back into every inch of it and if something broke or the paint wore out and got scratched, i'd probably just restore it if i were that concerned about originality. Look at just about any really nice restored car of any make, and it's worth even more if it has a history better than "it sat in some guy's climate control garage". If i had a chance to buy the garaged car vs. a Cobra that some guy raced when he was 20-something (of course, as long as it's in respectable shape for the price) i'd choose the raced car. Heck look at me now, look at most of us...we're driving Fox body cars that are going on anywhere between 11 and 25 years old and we're dumping money into them like it's no tomarrow, and for what? Why not just go out to your local Ford dealer and buy a new or used late 90s/early '00 Mustang? Because it's what you get when you make something your own, you modify something and you make it into something more than it was when it came out of the factory. That alone is worth more than any stock car, IMO.

go with the cobra, the focus is nothing more than a escort gt,, do you really think these focus's, and neons and civics are going to last with some miles on them? I work with a kid who has a decked out crx, he works on the thing every other day. They always have problems. I mean come on, it's a "cobra" I would love to have one of those! I love them! Just could never find one for les than 12K around here that wasn't junk.

Actually I liked my '91 Escort GT. It was one of the best cars I ever owned & served me well as a daily driver for 198,000mi. There is an '88 5.0 in the next garage bay. I had an '83 Escort Gt before it; but there was a '71 Mach 1 parked next to it. The little cars are good for commuting, handle well, get good mileage on 87, & have enough power to pass mini vans, but I would never show my face at the track in one.
