Fuel Pump Replacement

Does anybody have any instructions on how to replace the fuel pump in an 88 Mustang 2.3? I would imagine it would require dropping the fuel tank, then pulling the old pump out and replacing it with the new one. Is dropping the tank completey necessary? Any help or trouble saving tips would be appreciated.

Generally speaking,

1. Disconnect battery neg

2. Siphon out the gas until there is as little as possible in the tank. Getting the tank down with lots of gas in it is easy, but you'll be cursing when it comes time to put it back in place if u don't empty it. :)

3. I put a hyd jack under the tank to help lower it

4. Unbolt the two bolts holding the gas tank straps in place.

5. Lower tank with jack until it is low enough to reach your hand on top and disconnect fuel lines and fuel pump/sender wiring.

6. Sit tank on ground where you can work on it.

7. With a brass punch and hammer, rotate the fuel pump locking ring counter clockwise by hitting the edge of the ring. Hard to explain but yuo'll see what I mean. Use brass punch so that there is no chance of sparking like a regular screwdriver might do.

8. Remove fuel pump assembly, you'll have to manuever it out of the tank, it doesn't lift straight out. Get yourself a new seal for between the pump and tank (apx 3" diammeter rubber ring) too.

9. Disassemble fuel pump assembly (new pump comes with instructions). I put heat shrink tubing over the connectors of the new pump when I do them. Those two connectors are actually submersed in gasoline when the tank is full. With heat shrink tubing, there is no way the connectors can come off and spark inside the tank. I prefer this cause it is safer than just sliding the connectors on and crimping them with the small tab.

10. The trick is to note the way that the old filter screen comes off and use the same orientation when u put the new one on. If not, u will not be able to get the fuel pump back in the tank properly cause of the baffles inside the tank.

Reverse process to reinstall.

I went to purchase my new fuel pump today and they asked me if I wanted to order the one with the hanger or without? She also said that they both came with strainers. Now, my question is, what is a hanger, and what is a strainer? Some help would be appreciated.
