i got a new starter solenoid because i thought my old one was bad. so i hooked it up and still nothing. but then i realized that one of the wires wasnt on the starter so i connected that. but the battery was dead so i went to recharge it. well, i have my hood sitting in front of my car right now propped up against the wall in front of it. i have no e-brake right now so the car was in gear (4th) so i came back and put the battery in the car. as soon as i put the neg. side on, the car jumped at me and pinned me to the hood. i was scared the hood was gonna break, those ****ers are durable heard cracking but no visable damage. and i have a hi-torque starter on too, if that thing was in 1st gear instead of 4th, my legs would prolly be broken. the really scary thing is my car was in gear when i had it on the jackstands and i was under the car hooking up the starter correctly. if the battery hadnt been dead, it would have jumped off on the jackstands and landed on me. so how was everyone elses night?

forgot to say the reason it tried to jump at me. it turns out the auto zone starter solenoids are backwards from the factory ones, so when i hooked the battery up, the starter had constant power. they keys werent even in the ignition

hehehe, damn dude, you have to be careful with that stuff, now you won't forget that. My buddy and I installed a remote ignition on his stang, but it was a manual, so we bypassed the clutch switch, and we had it working, just had to remember to put that sucker in nuetral, well one day he hit that thing and he knocked it in gear, the car started, jumped forward and started to idle away down the street as he ran after it, finally got it stopped, took the ignition off it and ebayed it. :nonono:

Did you learn your lesson from this? Tough way to learn a lesson. Your lucky you didn't get seriously hurt. Just be thankful...You can never be too careful. I go a little over board sometimes. I triple check everything.
What happened, were the wires touching on the solinoid or the starter?
My night went pretty well. Had an interview with a police captain for a possible position. Went christmas shopping with my girlfriend (my stang cash stash is depleated substancialy now...but oh well) Watched a movie with her last night and woke up this morning with her curled up next to me. My night I think was better than yours...
How are your legs? A nice shade of black and blue I bet.

damn dude, i did almost the same thing. i was wiring an amp, the car was in 4th with the e-brake on. my friend was in the car and i accidentally completed the circuit on the solenoid with a screwdriver. the car jumped but didn't go anywhere luckily. i was standing off the the side so i was safe but it scared the hell out of me. my friend got out and was like what the hell are you doin under there. gotta be careful around that stuff, i learned my lesson.

i actually had a similar thing happen me two nites ago.. i noticed that my h pipe was sittin pretty low so i put the car up on some jack stands and slid under to check it out.. while i was reconecting the pipe (the drivers side pipe came off of the header somehow) i bumped one of the jackstands with my elbow and that whole side of the car just dropped.. thankfully i wasnt far enough on that side of the car that it actully landed on top of me.. but it did come pretty close.. it freaked the hell outta me! i slid out with my heart racing.. when i put the car back down and looked at the jack stands one of them had cracked and broke apart and the other bent pretty badly(i guess from the weight shifting so fast).. thats the last time ill ever use older tool like that

Damn you're lucky you didn't get seriously hurt - so the car fell off the stands ?

BTW- I was tuning my carb on my 68 once, and the car (auto trans) was sitting in my driveway in gear idling, the idle was low enough to where it wouldn't drive up the driveway, or roll backwards. I was leaning in the engie bay, and turned one of the a/f adj. screw enough to make the engine die out, and the car the rolled back and the tire ran up on my foot. Stopped my car from rolling down the driveway, and through the wood fence, but it pinned me there. A little shot of adrenalin and I jerked my foot out, and hoped in the car, and hit the brakes. Guess an auto will still roll in gear w/o the engine running.
But that was 13 years ago or so when I was 16 years old. :nice:

yea the two stands on the passengers side just collapsed.. they were pretty old and worn out so i probly shouldnt have been using them to hold the car up.. but at was all i had and i didnt think anything like that would ever happen.. next time i kno ill be a little more cautious

This is a good thing to bring to light for the young people on this forum. You cant be too careful and you dont get a second chance after you are maimed or killed. I learned not to pour gas into a running engine, well duh! I was on fire for 20-25 sec. and got medium depth second degree burns over 10% of my body. Luckily only my chest and stomach. Dont take chances around gas, it hurts like hell. I suspect you guys will inspect equipment better and not work on electrical things with the battery hooked up. I am paranoid, but I take both cables off when doing major work. I take the - off first and then the +, and put them back in reverse order to limit sparks. Oh and keep your face away from those batteries when hooking them up, I saw one explode in a guys face once. Sounded like a shotgun blast, very scary stuff.

yeah good thing u are ok...just be real careful when arounfd that crap....i get freaked real bad whn under my car..i try not to think about it cause i think that thinking abou tit might make it happen lol....if i am under teh car and slide up to the front and teh K member just grazes my chest i get the willies and get out lol...(only if im under there playing around) if im doing stuff important i keep going..im not afraid of going under just get the ebbie gibbies lol

I had a similar incident. I replaced the starter solenoid, but the battery was almost dead so It just flipped the switch and died... Well the starter solenoid welded its self in the start position!(Obviously I wasnt aware of this) I disconnected the battery and charged it up. When I came back and hooked the battery up the car jumped at me till a got the neg wire off. Was pretty scary. I wasnt hurt, but i learned from the exsperiance.

Just remember those starter solenoids are famous for doing that when the battery is at a low charge.

SO i guess its best to leave the car in neutral when ever dealing with the starter system.

Careful wrenching,

Ryan

Not possible, guess again.

IF you are talking about the main power section of the starter solenoid, it works no matter which way you hook it up.

If you hooked up both leads to one side, then I say duh!

Disconnect the bat and check it with an ohm meter if you dont believe me.
