Well my freind has an 89 GT with the following mods: Cobra Intake, CAI, Shortie Headers, O/R Hpipe, Flows, pullies, and a shifter. He is thinking about getting gears next and is not sure what to get. I am a 4.6 guy so im not to sure about what gear is optimum for a 5.0. The car will see alot of strip action, but it is a daily driver. Basically my question is are 4.10s to much are should he go with 3.73 or 3.90s? BTW its a 5speed with 3.08 now. Thanks

I have 4.10's But to tell you the truth I might have went a little to high. It's really fun downshifiting from 4th to 3rd and having the car go sideway's. If I could do it over I would get 3.90's. I like the 4.10's theres alot of get up and go. I plan on going NA with maybe a little shot of NOS in the future. The promblem with 4.10's with a stock motor is it doesnt rev high enough.

I think you'll be happy with either 3.73's or 3.90's.

Dude,Im getting 3.73's next week.( I have 2.73 right now) 3.90's sound a bit high , I do 120 miles a day,If your like me and do a lot of highway driving go 3.73's.I will post my results next week.Im like a kid in a candy store,I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd go with 3.90s if I were him. Pro 5.0 is the only company that makes such a ratio, at least as far as I know. Think of it this way...

4.10s are GREAT gears for a 5.0L with only minor mods. It was the first thing that was done to my car when my friend still owned it. 3.73s are GREAT gears for, say, a '93 Cobra with full exhaust, CAI, etc. etc. It'll pull a lot harder than the stock 3.08s, and highway top end won't be affected too too much because of the mods performed on the car.

The reason(s) I suggest 3.90s? A good compromise. If you put 4.10s and 3.73s in the same car, the difference really isn't THAT phenomenal. Yeah, you feel it, but without performing other mods it's not gonna be a night and day difference. Have you ever heard of people complaining about spedometer discrepancies after a gear change? Sure. Even if you change the speedo drive gears, it'll still read a little bit off. Surprisingly, 3.73s and 4.10s use the same drive gears. Since 3.90s are a ratio in the middle, I would guess that your speedo will be most accurate with them. Plus, you get the advantages of the high 4.10 and the not-so-high 3.73.

I had similar mods on my previous car, and had 3.55 gears. I wish it would have had 4.10's in it.

If I were him, I would get the 4.10's. You said that this car will see a lot of strip action, and that he drives it daily. Get the 4.10's, and don't look back. You can run a taller tire if the RPM's bother him, and he will appreciate the extra grunt in the 60 foot with the deeper gears. Invariably, this guy will add some heads and a cam, and the 4.10's will compliment them even more.

Let me put it this way, if I did not have plans to buy a KB Blowzilla 2.2 in the next 6 months, I'd be putting some 4.10's or maybe even 4.30's in my baby.

he does plan on heads and a cam after a while, so i think that 3.90s sound perfect. thanks for the input guys.
