The ones Kenny Brown had were functional but only because there was a good sized air pump/fan behind each one in the trunk pulling air in for a differential cooler. Or at least the one I saw was. The likelyhood of these being functional with out something pulling air in is slim to none.
Oh and to the guy stating rear brakes don't get hot. Get your head out of the car's exhaust infront of you or go to a real track that runs longer than the 14 to 15 seconds your's does. I've had both my fronts AND rears smoking after only a few hot laps. Albeit I can't drive and am hard on brakes and tires but then again what mustang isn't?

Hrmmm....I don't know if you meant me, but since looking back at this post and me being the only one repsonding to the cooling of brakes I'll assume you did.

I never said that the rear brakes don't get hot. In normal driving conditions the stock rear brakes should hold up no problem with no effective difference in cooling with the side scoops being functional or not. There should be no concern whatsoever of warpage of the rear brake rotors if one were to decide to remove the side scoop inserts. Now if you can't drive and you're hard on your brakes (like you said), sure after a couple of laps I'm sure all of your brakes would be cooked.

I have autocrossed my car too, running .2 secs behind a 2003 M3 the first time out with a stock suspension. Although we were both trying it out for the first time, I was clearly the better driver. I serioulsly plan to to some more autocrossing and road course racing next season because it was really fun to actually race the car through some turns.

Autocross is a ton of fun. However, when that gets old or you wanna stretch your legs give open track a try. It's like feeding crack to babies. You'll enjoy autox but trust me it will never be the same. ;) Also, tripple digit braking zones cause brakes to do some weird things, regardless of the driver. FYI, I added the "can't drive" section to maintain some humility. No one here can drive in comparison to others, and they can't drive when compared to a few.

I don't have 99 Cobra scoops, but the more recent scoops. Either way, I still don't like the honeycomb look.

I changed out my honeycomb inserts with 2003/2004 Cobra side screens. They look a little more realistic and were only $8 a piece.

You could mount some small machine guns behind the grills! This would give your car a subtle, yet effective way of saying to the car in front of you "Hey! Would you mind letting me pass you?" Or, you could make them swing open sideways and use them as some sort of "air-brake" thingy to help you slow down. That would be so cool!

some of you guys are crazy! "hey, i hate the way the side scoops look, so get the bullitt ones, which look about ten times worse, like someone forgot to add the scoops at the factory". I'll tell you what i did.
i went to home depot and got a metal mesh thing that i think is used to outline home gardens. Put my side scoop inserts next to them, cut out the template, and folded the edges around the cheap plastic honeycomb. They are the best looking sidescoops ive seen, (except for the cdc kit), and it cost me about four dollars. cant beat it! i wish i had a way to post pics of mine, you guys would all really like them. maybe i should sell them for about $150 a set! lol

incase anybody cares...I created my own functional hood scoop for the 01+ GTs...I will soon be attempting to go into the side panals and create the z06 style functional side scoop that will cool off the rear brakes. It's going to be a much larger project than the hood scoop, but I will keep you posted!!

1. create more drag at speed
2. make some more wind noise
3. look better while being entirely useless
4. maybe cool off the rear brakes that don't get too hot anyway.

 yeah, i thought about it, but from all the trouble it would cause.. its not worth it. only about 15% of your braking power is in the rear, and it would probably create some noise on the highway. If you want something that looks functional at least, get the saleen side scoops.. i think you just pop off the old ones, have the saleen ones painted, and ur good to go

I got tired of reading some response so I skipped half of this thread.

Anyway, IMO it is not worth it to go through the trouble of making the scoops functional. I don't think it would do much. I'd be more concerned about cooling the front brakes before the rear.

:nice:

Actually, they are not as simple as you would think. You have to remove the inside plastic paneling in your car to install the Saleen side scoops. Probably not that hard, just time consuming.

Plus Saleen quality sucks.

Oh and to the guy who thinks his sarcasm is funny, get your head out of your ass and wake up. 90% of mustang driver's don't autox. Out of the 10% that do, 9% know how to drive and have the brains to upgrade the brakes. Most of those 9% also know that when compared to the front brakes, the rear brakes don't get that hot. Also, if your suggesting that a drag strip isn't a "real track", you're in the wrong forum, and bought the wrong car. You shouldn't have bought a car that was set up and destined for a 1/4 mile race if you don't think a drag strip is a "real track".
