Higher gear(lower #) always = higher theoretical top speed or top end just like a 10 speed bike. 1st gear you pedal really fast but bike goes slow. 10th gear on the other hand you pedal really slow but bike goes fast. If you're going up a hill in a 10 speed bike your horsepower assuming you're normal is too low to continue to accelerate so you either slow down or down gears. In 5th gear out of 5 in a Mustang you can't downshift @ 130-140. But since 260 is not a lot of horses you can't reach your theoretical top speed of I'm guessing 180 w/ 3.27s.

Hopefully we got this thing settled. We all now know that lower gears will net a higher top speed(4.10>3.27), right? Okay then, time for an :OT: question. Does the top speed governor depend on what the speed rating of your factory tires were? I have heard that the V6 cars and the GT's that came with 16" wheels get cut off at 120 or so and the GT's, Cobras, and Machs that came with 17's are all governed at 149. Is there any truth to this? Obviously, I have no idea, since I never drive that fast.

yes, those with 16 inch rims are shut down at 120.

Well I know I definately can't go past 120, but I don't think it has to do with the speed rating of the tires, didn't the 16s still use ZR tires?

My 5.0LX had VR tires. All (mustang) V8 engine options should have atleast VR tires from the factory.

How old are you? I really can't fathom how you still dont get this concept. Are you one of the "special kids" in school? As I said in the post you actually quoted me on, you will be limited by power. NOT GEAR like you said.

Err, no... i top out 4th gear at 135 with 4.10s according to some simple math. So there is no way in hell I could get to 180mph with my tranny. Sorry, you lose.

My god what a wothless thread but hey I will add my .02. In a stock GT with stock 3.27 gears your fifth gear is worthless for anykind of top end acceleration however if you change the gear ratio to a numericaly higher number say 4.10 it makes fifth gear more useable.

Someone do the math 245/45-17 tire with 4.10 gears at 6000 rpm.
