T-5 question

How much are you guys able to run with a stock T-5? I might be getting a T-5 from an 87 GT that I will put into my 67 coupe, but I have around 300/330 torque with my 302, so I would assume that I need to beef up the 265 Max torque of the T-5. I know thrid gears is easy to blown out, and have found a kit that fixes that problem, but is that al that really goes out (besides syncros and such)? I don't wanna spend over a grand for a tranny that can handle 450+ torque when all I need is like 350 torque.

I've gone threw 3 T5's in less than 6months on a bone stock 86gt. And i dont beat on the car or race it. I would either buy a Ford racing T5 or what I did is forked up some cash and put in a Tremec 3550. Or if you put the T5 in just dont get on it or speed shift, you will destory it eventually. this place has some good parts if you ever need any.

What did you break in them each time?

first time, the tranny was completely rebuilt because it needed to be done. 2nd time i broke the main shaft, 3rd and final time i broke off about 12 teeth off 2nd gear and broke that cluster. As far as i'm concerned a T5 is nothing more than trash. and thats exactly what I did with mine, took the whole unit and tossed it into a dumpster. OR!! if you want to stick with a POS T5 heres another good company.

T5s are fine if you drive like you're elderly on your way to pick up your prescription at the drug store. I'd be willing to be that if you took a brand new T5 from Ford and powershifted it nice and hard on a stock motor that you'd grenade it. The only T5s that i've seen of any worth are the Gforce T5s, and they start at something like 1800 bucks. I dont think there is such a thing as having too much transmission...it's better to have more tranny than you need than more engine than your tranny can handle.
 
in my 88gt i blew my tranny after just 5000 miles of light beatings, then i put in a world class t 5 and never had another problem, even on the juice, in my 90 i still have the stock t 5 withh 100k+ on it and about 40k were good hard miles and still runs like a charm(knock on wood) but im waiting, ill probably go back to the world class t5 if for no other reason it treated me good!
 
Well so far so good for me. My T5Z has held up great thru 1 mild 302 & 2 built 347's all with a 125 N20 shot. I just don't power shift it HARD or do any 5k launches, just shift quick with a slight lift of the pedal is all.

Seems some people go thru em real fast yet others manage to make em last yrs even with moderate HP & TQ. Many ways to kill a manual, weather it's a tremec, top loader etc. i've seen both blow at lower power levels. some people should just run auto's LOL

Will replace my T5 with a T56 this week. Was driving at just a higher speed in 4th gear and all of a sudden I heard a thump. Got home and noticed the tranny was leaking from the speedometer connection. Thought might have been o ring in speedometer attachment. Wrong!!!!! Noticed that the casing had a hair line crack. I knew that the tranny would not handle the power of my supercharger but keep in mind I was just driving in 4th gear on freeway. Also the tranny did have 122k miles on it over the last ten years. Other than this no problem out of T5. Can't wait to drop in T56.
 
I,ve heard that the problem with the T5 is not only the interior gears, synchros, etc.... but the casing itself is very weak. So buying a G force with strengthened internals may seem good but the exterior will crack under heavy torque loads.
 
First off, I won't be power shifting here. All I am talking about is dumping the clutch or standing on it all of a sundden while driving; that's about it (gotta put the 4.11's to use you know :D ) When did Ford start putting World Class T-5's in? I have a buddy with an 87 5.0 that I can get the tranny from, and I though that they were World Class.

i split a t-5 case down the bottom with a 4 cylinder because of wheel hop. i also have a 4 cylinder t-5 behind a 350 hp 302 without any problems(after a rebuild), no clutch dumping, or hard shifting. its all in the way they're treated not how much power is in front of them
 
The tranny's started being world class sometime later than 86, and the regular world class tranny was rated at 300 lb ft, and the cobra t-5 is rated at 330(same torque rating as the t-5 z) Mainly higher torque rating due to their main shaft-imput shaft bearing being changed(upgraded) and the stronger alloy gearset
