Thoughts on hood "scoop"

I really hate that thing on my 02 GT. I don't really care about it being non-functional and I don't mind a "scoop" for purely aesthetic reasons but that giant plantar wart on the hood is just too much.

So a few questions:

1) How is it fastened to the hood? If the heat-shield blanket is taken down, are there fasteners holding it in place?

2) Are there lower-profile, more understated "scoops" available anywhere that can be dropped in its place?

3) Has anyone ever "chopped" the OEM scoop somehow? Can it be removed and, say, 1/4" or so removed from the bottom side to lower its profile?

I'm not sure I hate it enough to buy a whole new hood and have it painted to match the car but if something can be done to make it a bit less bulbous and more inconspicuous, I'd look at that :nice:

You can remove it, but your going to be left with some holes in your hood. The early scoops were held down with 7 (I think) fasteners, later scoops 01 and up are held on with just a couple bolts and nuts.
If you drop your blanket, you can unbolt it and remove it.

wanna sell it > if so email me at [email protected] LOL

Yea, I tried to remove mine. I thought that if there were only a few holes I'd just plug with with plastic plugs or something. When I pulled the hood scoop off I found that not only were there many more holes then I expected but also odd shaped ones as well (they are not all round). I also found that where the hood scoop contacted the hood that the paint was discolored as well so I just put it back on.

Thanks for some good ideas. The V6 hood and scoop ideas are interesting options. I think the 99 GT had a nice one too. Judging from the marks on the quarter panels left by the side "scoops", I bet you're right and there are some nasty scratches under the hood scoop.

Meh...maybe I'll just live with it.

Im still confused as to why you hate that its non functional, but want to take it off and lower its height..... still making it non functional.

Buy a v6 hood.

Re-read my first post. I said "I don't really care about it being non-functional and I don't mind a "scoop" for purely aesthetic reasons .... It's the size of the thing...that it sticks up 3 inches off the hood that bugs me. I'd be simply satisifed to have it there but just much more demure & understated. My low-power GT gets plenty of cool air from the big hole beside the K&N under the hood.

We make fun of ricers with park benches on their trunk lids. To me, the wart on the 01+ GT hoods is just as bad only it's factory installed which is actually sort of worse.

Didn't I read somewhere that even J. Mays was less than satisfied with the 99+ Mustang body design, the scoopery being the major gripe? Can't remember where though...

To each his own i guess cause the whole thing that attracted me to Mustangs was that hood scoop, the only Mustangs I really like are the newer models pretty much b/c of those scoops, they make the car really stand out and look very agressive IMO.

Trinity just go put the 35th edition scoop on I test drove a 2002 before I found my 99 and it is a big difference in size. You will have to change the drill holes for your scoop on your hood but as long as you seal it right shouldn't be a problem.

Soon as it starts getting warmer out I'm gonna make mine functional

Well, I like the scoop, even if it is fake. As for rice factor, well I always thought it was okay as long as it is factory. I personally think the 99+ GTs are too docile looking without the scoop, unless it has a more aggressive looking front bumper (like the Cobra's) to compensate the loss.
