My local mechanic wants 250 for labor + the gear and all the seals/bearings (whatever else comes in the kits) to install a 4.30 gear in my 97 cobra. Is this a real pain to install at home? I just dont want to go spending nearly 600 when its all said and done, seems to be a lot for a gear swap :-/

Thats not a bad price for the install. I would have to say yes, it would be a real pain to do it at home unless you have a lift, a depth gauge and all the other tools that are needed to install the ring, pinion and to press the new bearings onto the axle. I say pay the shop the money and hopefully they will do a good job! Nice choice of gear btw!! You will love them! My car is my DD and its great to drive around town and its not bad on the interstate.

wow stop right there

:nonono: that is way over priced. :nonono: its seems that they hiked up the priced to cover the time that they might spend scratching their heads. :bs: :nonono:

for 400 bucks thats should include the gears and fluids, and you should get some change back.

go to the west coast forum http://forums.stangnet.com/forumdisplay.php?f=39 and ask around for a mustang shop in your area. there has to be one some where near you in cali.

i know here on the east coast, with prices like that. :notnice: that shop would not last long. trust me stay far from there. the worst thing would be to pay that price and have your rear end eat itself up cause they didn't know what they were doing. shop around my friend.
and good luck

That is a good price for a gear install. Unles you know what your doing it will cause you a lot of headaches. What is the $600 pricetag all about?

My bad need to check my reading. Lets see
Labor $250
Gear $150, depending where he gets them, or you could by it yourself
rear end rebuild kit $ 100

Okay it may be a little high, maybe you should check around, you can always find a better deal. But quality is what your looking for.
