I was going to buy a 96 mystic cobra, but now after posts on here, I have decided to just keep my 99 cobra and forego buying it. It would be nice to have 2 of them in my garage, but then i would have the new payment and insurance as well. So, that being said, I have decided to paint my 99 cobra in 04 Mystichrome paint. I found a good shop to get it done at. I then went down to Ford and looked at the 04 they had to be sure i wanted the color. I just love it! I went back to the shop and they can order it in. It has to come directly from Dupont and costs $636 a quart! I need 2 quarts. The chameleon paint he could get was $500 a quart. He said he was told this paint is pre mixed and ready to go as well. I just also ordered a new rear bumper for the car so it says COBRA in it instead of mustang-I always hated that. They are calling tomorrow to set up a date to bring it in with their schedule load. They said it would take about 2 weeks to do. He also said he would basically take apart the car. The wing, hood, door panels, everything is coming off he said. They are doing the trunk and under hood as well. Total price will be $4441.50. He also said my couple of door dings and all surface scratches will be gone. I cant wait! I know its pricey, but I love the mystic color.

Just wondering if the Mystichrome paint you are getting from Dupont is really the same stuff that Ford uses? I heard you could not get that paint unless you could verify true ownership of an original Mystichrome car? Or is all that just a bunch of folk lore?...

The body shop called the dealer, gave them the paint code, then the dealer called back and said it would have to come directly from Dupont and would be premixed and ready to go and more expensive. Hopefully its the same!!

Does mystichrome have the same properties as 96 mystic? I know the 96 had the same "stuff" in it as what they use to make money, so they were real careful as to who got the stuff ($ counterfet prevention). But does that hold true of 04 mystichrome?

Actually the 96 only shares color shifting properties of the ink, not the same. The 04 paint is available, it is not as closley guarded as the 96 pigment was. So if it is coming from dupont then it is probably the same paint. Good luck with it and post some pics when it is done. Bye the way, to get the 96 mystic paint you do have to own the car. When i painted my wing a rep from the manufacturer and a ford rep came to see the car ordered the paint, inspected it after it was done and supervised the washing of all tools and eqiupment after it was done. I slipped the painter a c note for about half a quart of paint for touch-up reasons. He told the reps he used it for painting the trunk lid, which he did anyways. Not sure if they believed him or not though. I guard that can with my life and two husky wolf shepard crosses, so good luck gettin off me lol.

No u dont, anybody can get that color. Ive seen it on a bunch of cars, u name it..

Not trying to be rude... but, your wrong. You must prove ownership of a Mystic Cobra and give a VIN# off your engine and show your certificate of auth. before they will sell u the paint. I just bought a quart to re-paint my Saleen body kitt off my current Mystic to switch to my new Mystic (a lower miled 96 Mystic) It cost around 589.00 a quart. And before I could get it, i did infact have't to show proof of ownership. And the other mystic owner who stated earlier that reps came and watched his car get painted, he was correct. If u buy enough, they will fly advisors down to guard the paint and make sure any 'left over' paint is taken back. I know this for a fact. I own 3 of them, i've had to get paint twice, go through the same process every time.
They got that stuff on :lock: down!

Color Code

Actually, you do have to own the car to obtain the paint from BASF. There are other color changing paints that look similar, but the specific chemical make up of the 96 mystic paint requires vin verification by BASF and Ford, along with sending a representative to the location to supervise the painting and clean up of tools to ensure no paint goes un-accounted for. The paint code is locked. The new Mystic chrome isn't locked. I guess they want to maximize on profits and at over $600 a quart, they can make some extra cash.

Can Mystic be obtained from any paint dealer?
No. BASF is no longer producing Mystic. There is a restrictive procurement process in place to insure that the current supply of repair paint will be available for years to come, and to preserve the limited edition status of the original Mystic Cobras. The procedure for obtaining the paint is outlined in Ford TSB #95-16-3.

To insure an undetectable repair, pigment from the same batch that was used in the OEM finish is also used in the Glasurit and R-M repair paints.

Note that there are some colors very similar to Mystic (and very different but with the same color shifting look) in BASF's line of Extreme Color paints, Dupont's ChromaLusion paints, KameleonKolors by House of Kolor, PPG's Harlequin, and Dupli-Color's Mirage line of paints.

You are correct about the '96, it is on lock-up, but the '04 Mystichrome can be bought by anyone and a couple other brands make it as well. BASF made the '96 Color and Dupont makes it on the '04. Dupont has a color called Mystic Purpleen, which I used on my car, which is an almost exact copy of the '96 color.

I will soon have MASS quantities of the MYSTICHROME color. I will be selling it for around $225/pint, and slightly cheaper if alot is bought. This type of paint normally sells for $320-$380 a pint. If you are interested in some of this paint, email me at [email protected]
