How can I stop my......

ph33r the gubbmint, you must do everything that they deem is right and proper or you are a BAD person.

If you want to keep track of your mileage for your personal reference, you can install an engine hour-meter (which consists of nothing more than screwing it to something and attaching the wire to the ignition circuit) and see how many hours you accumulate in 4,999 miles of driving. Then disconnect the speedo and use the hour-meter for reference thereafter. It makes much more sense to use an engine hour-meter to track your motor's lifespan because it tells you exactly how long the engine has been running, not how many miles the car has been in motion. Which is rather idiotic when the vehicle could be a police interceptor that sits at idle all day long or a semitractor that spends 90% of its runtime at 80-100mph.

fcuk everyonethat says its wrong...man i posted on how to flip my odometer back to ZERO and all i got was hell (except from most of the decent normal people on here). i was installing a WHOLE NEW cluster so it was gonna be off anyways, and the car was getting a new motor so i wanted the cluster to read 000000 when i started her up , TO SHOW LEGIT MILEAGE INCASE I SOLD IT. and i took pics of the old odometer and put that in my stang folder so they can add the mileage of both to get actual Body mileage, and still some people were flipping.

What im saying is i doubt hes trying to rip anyone off man...its rare to find a stang thatd under 100000 now anyway and the state wont gaurantee the accuracy and usually carfax will say there was a discrepancy anyway. Highbred is right, most motors are old anyway and it goes on what u think of the body and motor condition. not a measly few miles hes subracting. Hell, if your gonna bicth abou that, ill be willing to bet u got the wool puled over your eyes on mileage when u bought your stang, or u would be someone to say te motor was rebuilt 30000 ago when it was really 50, or 98k miles NOT 198...

Ok, here's just the opposite question. I plan on installing an aftermarket speedo in my '91. Do I have to roll the thing forward and how do I do this. I'm sure I'm not 'allowed' to just throw a new speedo in without resetting the odometer to the correct mileage. Besides, even though I'm in the same boat with the idea of never selling my 'Stang, I like to know where the car has been. :)

Not going to get into the right and wrong arguement, but can you please explain to me what a months worth of mileage has to do with emissions?

Someone correct me if I am wrong here,

But he has filed for emissions exemption on his car. Meaning he can get a sticker without passing the emissions test. Part of the filing for emissions exemption is that he cannot drive the car more then 5,000 miles per month. He wants to disconnect the speedo cable so that he can drive as many miles as he wants.

correct, well partly. its 5k a year. so if you have driven under 5k since last emmison you are exempt. dont get offended but alot of you guys are ridicolous saying thats its a fraud to stop milage. Its his car and his car will fail emmisions of his not exempt which will make him have to fix his exhaust then go throught emissions again. he doesn't plan on selling it so whats the big deal of disconnecting it. hmm i wonder about some people..

other wise your stright if u d.c the speedo/milage cluster :nice:

5,000 miles per year. Everything else is correct. If I start to get close to my 5,000 mile limit Im going to pull the speedo so I dont get fined out the ass. I drive the car from April to November. about 7 months out of the year. So I can drive 700 miles a month not to shabby.

i want to know about this too. would you just have to take a picture like black331stang did...or could you actually put it at the right mileage

You could roll them forward....though its gonna be impossible to get them lined up perfectly. This is how they tell if your odometer was tampered with.

I'd take a picture of the new cluster, old cluster, and like a installation pic incase you ever sell the car and you want to be honest with the seller. Like Black331Stang did.

just get a race car waver, you cant get a ticket for going more then 5k a year so why disconect the speedo? the speedo police are not going to come get you, the 5k a year is only for show cars i think,??

or you can tell them that the car is being restored cant test it till -------

I live in PA and am in the same boat as you. I certainly don't fault you for trying to find a way around the retarded new laws. I'm also going to try to go the sub 5,000 mile per year route, but I don't think I'll need to tamper with the odometer to do it. I say any way you can get around it, do it.

BTW, for those asking about replacing clusters and such, I heard a while back about some decal you can get, not sure if it's from the gov't or what, but it goes in your door jamb and lets future owners know that the car has had work done to the odometer. I don't know if it would hold up in court, but it couldn't hurt.

Nitrous Tommy- It's not about getting a ticket. It's about the state inspection. They've rolled this new emissions initiative into the annual inspection, and without that, your car is illegal to operate on public roads, period. IIRC, even cars with Classic, Antique, and Street Rod tags have to have some form of inspection.

pull it? when u go to get insepcted he'll be busted...its easuer just to unplug it under the car.

And yes u can roll mileage forward...u get a small small flathead and u have to basically push the specific roller u want to change till it makes a loud snap/crack noise.

i messed with something on teh speedo and now it doesnt liek the lineup at zero anymore lol it will rest at like 20...but i played with it for a while and finally got it...we'll see how it is in teh car.

You can take it to a local speedometer shop and they can reset it to the correct mileage. I had a speedo go bad in my 95 and the speedo shop installed a used cluster and set it to the mileage on the old one. But the dumbass installed a v6 cluster instead of a GT cluster. He couldnt get the right one so I ended up getting it from the ford dealer. There is alot of red tape you have to go through to certify the correct mileage and its reported along with your VIN and all that good stuff. You cant just buy a new "blank" cluster, at least not in my state.

I'm notorious for being a lazy reader but I haven't seen the obvious answer yet-please correct me if I'm stealling somebodies thunder. Go to ebay, buy another gauge cluster (must be from same year) and swap them when you need to. I also do not want to get into the right and wrong aspects of this conversation but this is an easy solution. Heck you could even turn them back or forward when you have them off....easy and practical.

Geeez my car clocked in at 232xxx miles some time before the speedo stopped working, so God only knows how many miles are on my car. How can you get it exempt from echecks? The only way i know is if they're 25 years old or older, or at least that's what i've heard. Anyone from Ohio that knows better?

I saw your post a few days ago about passing emissions and you said that you do not have an catted H pipe or a friend who has one. Someone mentioned that he was exepmt because he actually drives less that 5K on his car a year. A inspection sticker will cost you $30 a year and a rusty old H pipe from the junkyard will run you about the same.

Wouldnt it be easier to just spend $60 bucks? :notnice:

I'm planning on pullin my smog pump out this spring, and my car didnt come with cats when i got it, so the rusty H wont help me (not sure if you were talkin to me or not). I know that here in Ohio if you've got a classic, you can get classic plates that (i think) dont have to be registered every year? I really doubt i put 5k on my car a year, even if i drive it to the track, which i'm not going to do with this damned C4 anyways. I figure i could race it all season and have the occasional evening cruise and still clock in under 5k a year.

People need to learn how to read. I probably wont even drive my car 5,000 miles in a year. But if I get close im pulling the speedo cable. An inspection sticker costs 15 bucks. The junkyards dont have any 5.0's or parts anywhere. I called for a stock h-pipe nothing. A new catted h-pipe cost 400 bucks. Im not out here to screw anybody but there isnt any other way to do this without putting a hole in my pocket.
