Question regarding timing cover

Does anyone have any good blown up pictures of the front of a timing cover? The side that is behind the back of the water pump? I had a antifreeze leak that appeared to be coming from the bottom of the water pump, so I am in the process of replacing the water pump. After scraping off the old gasket material from the timing cover, I noticed a good size notch towards the bottom of the timing cover where the water pump gasket goes over. I believe that is where the coolant might have been coming from. I am just wondering if anyone else has ever seen this notch on their timing cover and where it could have came from? I am wondering if I should fill it in with JB weld before I put the water pump on.

Thanks!

The metal plate that goes on the WP actually seals the pump itself. the only area the cover sees water is at the opening on the sides. the little notch is there just incase there is a leak at the gasket the coolant can excape.
