Just curious if anyone has done this, removing there air filter at the track and seen better times. I know that i would be taking a chance of trash being sucked up into my motor, but would just like to know if this could help. I currently have the factory air box with the silencer removed and the factory tubing from the maf to the tb, this weekend i plan on installing a homemade pipe 4 inches in diamater from the tb to maf, should this help any?
Thanks.

H D, I love that picture. "Office Space" was funny as hell. "Um, yeah. I'm gonna have to ask you to go ahead and....um........ yeah."

Wow, .5 seconds drop without the filter? Kinda hard to believe but I guess it's possible if you had a really good run. I see lots of guys at the track with the headlight removed for more airflow to the intake.

i have run without a filter before.and it did help *a tiny bit*.

however while you are reducing the amount of resistance for air going into the intake, realize that you are drastically reducing the intake surface area. notice how the air filter has lots of ridges in it, this creates a larger surface area for air to be pulled in through. without the filter you only have a hole.

this is why 'big mouth' (ie the 2ft long things) filters work so good.

if you want real gains, get a bigass k&n.

Hey thanks for all the info everybody, i just got home from work and checked for some feedback, sounds all really good to me, especially if i could drop .5 tenths of a second, mabey this could get me a very low 13 or possible break into the 12's, i won't get my hopes up that high but sounds like everyone has had good results, i'll try the sock trick, how should this be done just cut the sock down to where the only part left is where your toes go in? Hope this will helps me just a little until i get my 4.10's installed.

I dropped from a 14.9 to 14.4 when stock by taking out the airfilter.

I'm calling :bs: on that one. How do you know it wasn't because of a better launch? Where the runs back to back? 1/2 a second from removing the filter? I'm not doubting you went from 14.9 to 14.4, but I seriously doubt it was from removing the filter. How many hp does it take to gain 1/2 second? 50? I doubt the filter robs 50 hp from the engine.

This is true. Even if the filter robbed 10hp, it might make a 1/10 difference. Other factors must have given him a .50 drop.
Leave the filter, or some sort of filter in.

just pull the whole sock over the opening like it is your foot. you might gain a tenth but half a second is really hard to believe.

Well when my 97 was strock it was SEVERLY chocked on the high end. I made 2 14.9 passes and then took out the filter and went 14.4 on the very next run. I agree it was a better launch, but the cars pulled to the redline much easier I found. I dont take the filter off with the supercharger however.

Going from 14.9 to 14.4 with a better launch doesn't surprise me. When my car was stock I ran times anywhere from 14.7 to 13.9 with no changes to the car. It's all about the 60 ft and shifting. But, there's no way you'll go from 14.9 to 14.4 from removing the air filter. That's just plain ridiculous, and in your first post, that's what you were claiming.
