i've never broken a tranny before and i have a question about it. usually when it breaks is it still driveable? i know there are about a thousand different ways it can go and sometimes it won't be but what usually goes first?

the reason i ask is because i don't want to break my t5 on the track this year and be stranded at the track which is an hour away from my house and have to pay to get it towed home. i was thinking about upgrading but i don't wanna do this unless i absolutely have to. (i'm very poor right now)

so if i break it at the track, what are the chances of me still be able to get home?

very slim, if you are already moving you can get it in fourth and drive it because it will be locked in a 1:1 ratio, but the chances of you getting it moving from a dead stop enough to get it in fourth are slim. Also if something broke i would recommend pushing in the clutch and bringing the car to a stop as fast as possible.... The longer those gears spin in there, with pieces of metal flying around in there and being chewed up by the other gears the more damamge you are going to do.

If you have chunks of metal floating around in your transmission case, eventually it will wind up wedging itself between two gears and either completely lock up, or break off more chunks that have the same chance of doing more dammage.

I think your best bet is to sign up for a premium towing coverage with an auto club, like AAA. Otherwise you can get a trailer and tow vehicle, or you can get the transmission repaired close to the track and hitch a ride home, then bum a ride to the track when it's done.

Yeah thats usually what goes first it is usually ok if you don't powershift, if you do it's only a matter of time. The torque causing the gears on the mainshaft to spread from the counter shaft gears, this results in a very low contact patch(mesh) on the gears, and third is usually the worst.

The ideal thing to do, i would think is to get someone to tag along with a trailer on their truck or someone with a cell phone thats aware, and can come get you and the car w/o a whole lot of notice

I have broken a tranny at the track, fortunately i have a buddy with a shop, and i am only about 10 miles from the track. (however, my case went as well and i got stuff all over the track and i got an earful, they acted like i did it on purpose.)

good luck

alright thanks for the advice guys. i think i've came to the conclusion that if it's not broke i'm not gonna fix it yet. i just checked my insurance plan and it turns out i already have free towing on there so i think i'll be good to go. :nice:

Find out what distance they will tow. I know some will only do 5-10 miles, then you pay the remainder.
