Does anyone have an approx. top speed for the two in stock form? I read somewhere that the 5 speed could hit 142-148 mph and the auto about
128-137 mph. Does 4:10 gears affect this, make the car faster or slower?

I have 4.10s and ran it up to about 150 and seemed to have a little left. But I kept thinking to myself...if I blew a tire out right now, I'm gonna die....so I slowed down. :)

I'm with you there.

I've had my 96 (5sp) up to 135 before 4.10's and it pretty much was all it had.
With gears I can wrap the speedo needle back to the pin so with that crappy speedo gear that is about 10% off and the normal inaccuracy of the speedo I would venture to say I'm at or above 150 actual. As for that age old question do gears slow you down...NO....you run out of engine before you run out of gears unless you are forged and supercharged. Another thing is I'm almost positive autos are governed to 125. At least the 2000 GT I ran against was because 3 different times it was like he hit the brakes at 125. :D

im pretty sure mine is governed at 140 cuz i hit 5th and it just stays steedy
my buddys got and auto that has hit 155 so i think those # u put up r switched
A governed car will shut down...not hold a steady speed. Almost like you hit the brakes. At 140 you are running out of motor. If your buddy's auto hits 155 then he has had the computer reflashed to remove the governer or has a chip. If I'm wrong I apologize but that is what I have learned in most cars.

At a track in Mexico, I got the needle past 150 in 5th w/ my 4.10s. Not sure how fast I was going 'cause of the error in the speedo. Suprisingly, the car was smooth.

I do not havea reflash or anything. Mustangs, and many other cars for that matter, are ELECTRONICALLY speed limited, not goverened. A governor is a mechanical device that cuts off fuel and the such to slow the car/engine down. I do not know if there is a speed limit difference between autos and 5-speeds, I dont see any reason why there should be but who knows. Usually the facotory sets these limits because of the speed rating of the tires, and can be reflashed to coincide with whatever speed rating your tires are.
