Possible Rod knock?

Lately, I've been noticing a "knock" that comes from the lower-driver side of the engine compartment. I can hear it if I listen between the driver-side wheel and the fender. It's more noticeable in the car and the frequency of the sound increases with the engine speed up to a certain point (1500+ RPM) then it goes away (Or I just can't hear it anymore). It's much more noticeable when hot than cold.

It reminds me of the "Fuel Cackle" the powerstrokes had where it sounds like someone is hitting the inside of the cylinder with a ball-peen hammer.

I've attached a wav file with the recording of the powerstroke "cackle". Now, my my car obviously doesn't sound like a diesel and the "knock" I have isn't as loud, but it gives you an idea as to the frequency and general idea of the sound. Powerstroke Cackle

I thought this might be the head "tick" I've heard about, but it sounds much deeper than that.

Any ideas?

I know exactly what youre talking about because i have it too.

its a sort of a subtle "hit" inside the engine when its totally warm
its not exactly a tick. ijm gonna subscribe to this one because i have the same noise i just dont know what it could be.

I've taken it to the dealer twice for this and both time they've said "Could not reproduce/Normal Engine Sound".

I don't know if it's anything serious, but I KNOW it wasn't this loud a few months ago. My concern is that if I can hear it now, then obviously something has happened to make it louder.

Sounds similar to what my car sounded like. When it first started making the noise I took it to Ford and they said they didn't hear anything abnormal. So I kept driving it and it got louder and louder. It got to the point where drivers next to me could hear it at a stop. Took it back and it was a rod bearing. Ford replaced the motor.

I had thought it might be the defective head issue, but it didn't sound like a tick. I think I'll take it back to the dealer and ask for this TSB to be done and see what they say.

Do you know what the procedure is to test for this issue?

I think it was around the 15,000km mark. Now I have 20,000km on it and it's much louder and more frequent than before. It's an '02 GT.

I'm still well within the warranty period.

[edit] Whoops!! I see you were replying to 2k2SilverBullet and not me :p [/edit]
