As some of you who read about my botched HCI swap know I had to get it towed to the shop where the also noticed shot cam bearings....so after engine pulled sent to machine shop to replace cam bearings...well 2 days later they call the other shop where my actual car was and say that I need new Rod Bearings too. They said 2 of them were non existant.......my questions is that my car had only 80k on it and the engine ran IMACULATE, and I never thought there was the slightest problem in the engine and now I have all these dead bearings.....what is going on with this? also have any of you ever had the rod bearings replaced? any estimate on the labor if the engine is already out of the car and disassembled? Thanks guys I needed to vent.... :notnice:

Man you got some badddddddd luck. Can u trust the shop the engine is at? I find very few honest mechanics.

Sorry i dont know too much about rod bearings, but whens the point that you say F IT and get a 331 or 347 stroker kit? The engine is already disassembled.. no better time then now :)

lol yea I trust the shop the car is at but the machine shop could very well be fing with me.....my mechanic friends said I am 300 bucks away from getting it stroked.....but I am in debt to both shops for over 1000 bucks so I cant afford it:( talk about bad luck.....

Try posting your question over on Hardcore50 Mustang Racers forum, The Small Block Ford Group. There's some long time engine builders that hang out there and will answer all your questions.

the labor for the bearings should be next to nothing if the engine is already out and dissasembled. if the guy says you need them, just replace them. they don't cost very much and labor shouldn't be much at all. it's already out and apart, why take the chance? if it was mine, i'd put all new main bearings in it too.

you dont' wanna get it all back together and then find out 5,000 miles down the road that the machine shop was right.

Exactly, the bearings are cheap insurance while the motor is all apart, I'd also do the mains, and to be honest if it is that far apart, I'd hone the cylinders and put new rings in, then you have a fresh motor.

i totally agree.

Eagle has a awesome deal right now for 4340 cranks. all sizes. brand new never used. the only problem with them is that there cut .010/.010 because of either scratches or unproper measuring. there selling for like $500 Canadian. (thats threw my work tho) if your only short 300 bucks for a stroker, id consider it.

Trust me guys I would replace all the bearings if I could but I am in debt to both shops and I am not making any money right now so I dont know how to pay for the bearings that are already being done. I would love to just drop a few hundred more and have a brand new motor (practically) but I am selling everything I have for nickles and dimes to pay what I already owe. I tried the loan route but no approval:( I was thinkning that the rod bearings wouldnt be that much in labor but the shop my vehicle is at said it is alot of labor, so I am kinda lost. I figure if they say more than 300 in labor for the rod bearings they can f** themselves......

IMHO, you need to go and take a look for yourself or if you are unsure take someone who knows what to look for. If you had no probs before and good oil pressure, yea, they might be worn some but still, I would want to see the damage myself.

Good Luck

your getting screwed. there is no way that a rod bearing can be non existance. now it could be showing a little copper maybe. me personally if i ever pull a motor down that far i replace all bearing and also rings. but the motor could not have run has good has you make it seem and have bad cam and rod bearing. for one the oil pressure should have been low. cam bearings dont usually wear out before the bottom end bearings. and if either were bad you would really hear them during acceleration. just my 2 cents i have built too many motors to know the difference. oh and if the bearings are bad be sure to have the crank checked if not showing signs of being scared it can take on a so called egg like shape. good luck

I had a lil something to do with the cam bearings...(took cam out with lifters in:(...dont drinnk and work on car!) and I scratched them up a little bit, but I had excellent !! oil pressure, it was always about 3/4 on the guage. I am gonna call on monday and if they havent done it yet I am gonna go down and check them out.

This freaking sucks man! Sorry to hear about this. I was wanted to see how your trick flow set up was going to run since I am going that route myself. Don't give up and good luck!

Tell me about it man, and now I am too broke get it tuned once I put it in....:(

heres the deal, I went down to the machine shop this morning and checked out the bearings...there arre 2 that are semi worn to where u can make out a little copper but the rest looked fine to me. They said I should go ahead and do them all and it woudl be 300 labor:( What are the chances that if I say F*** u and just get my engine back together, that in 5k the engine will throw a rod?

What's a better idea? Spend the 300 bucks, or possibly watch the crank or rods take a left turn into the walls of the cylinder? It's your choice. 300 bucks sounds awful cheap for piece of mind.

yea if they could do them now I would pay the cash for the peace of mind, BUT they dont know if they will even get to them this week.....keep in mind I still have to put the whole topend together after that too, and I need my car to get to school and job hunting......so I am ready to say f*** it and just take my engine and get it dropped back in to the car so that I can put it together.....
