When I get my 05, it will be my first Mustang. I am so glad Ford has FINALLY offered more HP than the previous Mustang models because I always leaned towards the quicker Camaro. So now that Ford has hit 300HP with the Mustang, I am VERY anxious to drive one, do you think it will be as quick as the old 5.7L 305HP Z28's? I hope so. Its kind of sad they stopped making the Camaro because this would now be a bad ass competition.

If you're talking about the LT1, then yes, this car will kill it. An LT1 wa supposed ot be a driver's race for a 99+ GT %spd. Ive taken out 2 Z28's (AT), but both were close races. The LS1's would be a good race for the 05 but i still give it to the Z28 in this case. They are seriously underrated from the factory and haul som emajor @ss

Honestly, we won't know until mags get the first test drives or they hit the lots for us to try out. Right now, they are saying roughly 320HP or 282FLBSTQ, so, it looks as if it would match up with the current MACH1....which is staying with and passing the Z28!

Really? I thought I heard that they will carry 300Hp, at least thats what everyone is saying but it may be even higher? that would certainly rule.

300HP is what FORD is saying...usually performance cars are under-rated for insurance cost...such as the Cobra now-a-days....I still will agree with HoustonGT that the LS1's will prolly beat us, until we charge up, but LT1's should not be a probelm!

Thanks for the info, I thought I had heard they under-estimate the HP in sports cars for that reason. If it does come with close to 320 or so, I can't wait to see if we get some nifty after market toys to bump it up to 375-400HP!!

It will be a close call but the Mustang should take a win.

The LT1(93-97) has a high torque 325 lb.ft at a low 2400 rpm , weighs about 3300 lbs. Although it's not flat (hence peak hp is about 285/305 hp)but then the chassis of all fbodies are so flexy because of the absence of the sfc's. They do have good roadholding index of about .86 g's, came with CI blocks with Al heads; also have the notorious optispark problem.

The LS1 (Al block and Al heads, has a peak torque of 335 lb./ft torque) at about 4k rpm but as it's flatter, peak hp is about 320 hp. Chassis and all is same as in LT1. 0-60 LT1 will give a good fight to the 05, 1/4 mile the LS1 should give a good fight.
1/4 mile the LT1 will lose as the power to weight ratio of the 05 Mustang and chassis dynamics is better.

The 05 should win to 60 with a good driver but it likely will be a toss up. The best I have seen a fbody run is a 5.5. The fbodys ran 13.5's in the 1/4 on street tires stock. We can only hope that the 05 can better that with a good driver. The reality is that even before the numbers are released we can assume that it will be a complete toss up with cars so evenly matched.

They are not underrated for insurance costs, they are underrated so Ford doesn't end up with egg on their faces again like back in 1999. Do you really think it matters if the Mustang GT has 300 or 310HP to insurance companies. A 310HP Z28 is cheaper to insure than a 260HP mustang GT or 170HP Acura Integra.

Back to the topic, the '05 should have no trouble handing LT1 Z28s, but I think '01-02 LS1s will still be a little faster, the 320HP 2001 Cobra wasn't faster so the 300HP '05 GT probably won't be faster. The LS1s have more torque.

I really do like the LS1 engine and might have considered the GTO if it wasn't so damn ugly, heavy and expensive. I am still going to test one today though to see what I will be up against when I try to race one with my new Mustang, I'll let you know how it drives.

All you can really do is speculate till the car is out and it has been tested. Noone knows how fast it will be.

My answer to the question would be , we will find out later this year.
Aint that the truth everyones speculating based on the cars reported horsepower. You cant guess a cars 1/4 mile time based on its horsepower its impossible. They could easily be underating it. Plus we really have no clue how these cars will perform, the 3v 4.6 V8 is something thats basically new. If the powerbands "peaky" its gonna be slower then we think.

Very closer, but most likely not. What does the 02 M6 z28 trap? 107-108mph? That's a bit higher than even the Mach 1 (105-106) which the Gt is supposed to duplicate. However, E.T's will probably be closer (lower to mid 13's). Probably a drivers race, but we won't know till we see some times from the 05. One thing is certain, they'll still have us beat on the hp department (most 02 ls-1's are in the 300-310rwhp range). We'll see. I personally think it'll be fairly close.

z28 will win, with a good driver. Perfect conditions, great driver, you can bust 12/9's with a m6. I will sya out of the hole, close, but when the speed get over 80, the z28 will start pulling.
How do you know the Z28 will win when you have never driven a 05? So the Z28 is automatically quicker then every other car even ones that dont exist yet? Nobodys driven a 05 or anything remotely simillar. We dont know a damn thing yet about which is faster and we wont know for probably half a year.

I agree that the z28 would win with slicks but not on street tires. The bet I ever saw one run is a 13.5 and 5.5 to 60. That means it will like ly be a toss up on without slicks.
