Hey all, my '03 cobra is gettin to the point where its too powerful for the stock braking system. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight as far as what to look for ina brake system, cross drilled vs. slotted rotors, calipers etc... any help would be greatly appreciated! THANKS

How do you know your current setup is "too powerful" for the stock system?
Are you open-tracking or road-racing your vehicle and experiencing fade?

Before you drop over a grand on new calipers/rotors, why not upgrade the brake lines to stainless steel & consider a more aggressive brake pad (ie - Hawk) along with bleeding out all of the old fluid.
Fresh fluid is good, heat kills!

i totally agree with the first response. if you're just drving on the street or you drag the car, the stock cobra brakes should be more than adequate with a pad upgrade. Unless you drive like a lunatic on the street, I can't imagine generating enough heat in either situation to cause a serious fade problem.

if you auto-cross or open track the car, Baer makes a great system. Their Pro-plus and Extreme are vast improvements over the stock system. While thye don't sell a rear caliper, you can swap out the rear rotor and go with their eradispeed setup. all this will run you 4-5 thousand dollars. hardly worth it if you don't auto-cross or open track the car.

I've also heard good things about Stop Tech from the EVO, WRX, and BMW crew I see at the track. Cars I've raced that had the Syop tech system performed very well. However, I've never seen them on an open track Cobra (maybe because most cobra owners just drag race). They may be worth looking into but I've talked to Eric at XMP about them. He doesn't like the Stop Tech setup. If he's than man tuning your car, maybe you should take his advice. he's never steered me wrong.

If you really put the brakes to the limit, just get slotted rotors. Cross drilled rotors look pretty but may crack when you really flog them at the track. And when I say flog, I mean repeatedly pushing the car to 100% which is hard to do unless you have some serious seat time at the track.

by the way, how did you get 550 HP from those mods? typically, they should put you between 480 and 500 to the wheels. just curious. did you leave somehting out?

The first response was correct. What makes you think that the "system" is insufficient.
You have 13 inch rotors to start with. From your second post it sounds like you have a need for different pads. The stock ones are for normal street driving. If you are agressive then a different pad is in order.
Consider changing to a performance pad that is street compatible since most of your driving is there (not a track only car). I use Hawk pads and like them very much. HPS or HPSplus would be a good choice.
As for rotors. Cross drilled IMO is for show only. A stock brembo rotor has around 95% breaking surface available. When slotted that surface drops to the low 90% range. If cross drilled you are in the mid 80% range.
The "best" brake is a solid faced rotor for high performance braking.

If the pad is gassing sufficiently to cause it to release on the rotor then the pad needs to be of a different compound that will let it operate at higher temperatures.

Just my 2 cents.

I was talking to somebody who said he will ONLY put stoptechs on his stang, because thats what he uses on his racecar. Thats gotta say something if he's willing to spend an extra $900 for a kit that he prefers over the Brembo 4pot kit.

A few 5.0 mags back they had a comparison test between the 00'R and 03 Cobra. The braking test revealed the 03 Cobra would fade excessively at high speed stops where the 00'R did not. I think upgrading the front brakes to a 4-piston caliper such as Brembo, Baer, or Stoptech would definetly be worth the cash. I think it is hard to say that one brand is better than the other. You might want to consider running front brake cooling ducts if you are going to be doing any open-tracking.

I think that for the price Baer would be about the same as going with the Cobra kit as the Baer kit (that runs around $700ish) comes with the same 2piston PBR calipers, and comes with 13" 1piece rotors. The Brembo kit comes with 4piston calipers and 1piece rotors for under $1200, and the StopTech that retails at $1995 comes with 4piston calipers, but with 2piece rotors. The Brembo for 2piece rotors is about $2100 or so.

If you look at the Baer with the 4pots, those jump to a little higher than $2200 from what I've seen (with 2piece rotors however). Wilwood is another one I've heard not so good things about.

Everyobdy's own opinion though right :) Personally on my car I'll be putting the StopTechs on due to the stiffer caliper and patented bridge design. Having hookups to get the Brembos and Stoptechs at near cost, I still choose the ST and for now until I get $ I'm just replacing the rotors with Brembo sport rotors.
