the only thing i see wrong with the car is the little rod thing that connects from the 90 degree elbow on the exaughst to a round canister beside the turbo is loose ( i think its is the wastegate thing i know nuthing about turbos all i know is that i have one) it looks to me that the rod should be connected it was workin fine until i had the bright idea to drive the car off the blocks (the rear tires were on blocks and i didnt have a jack that worked) they werent but maybe 7-8 inches tall and i drove off fine (i have done it many times) well this time u cant even hear the turbo and the boost guage is goin the wrong way on the guage in neautral i dunno the only thing i see wrong with the motor is that rod thing

please help thanks

ok

There is a black circle canister right in between the block and the turbo. There is a rod with a flattened looking end with a hole in it comming out of the back running to the 90 degree elbow that my downpipe connects to and there is a thing comming out of the bottom of the elbow that looks like it would connect to the rod by a lil metal peg that would stick down in the hole on the rod. Well they arent connected to each other and my car isnt making any boost and i hear no turbo spoolin at all and i have absolutely no boost at anytime. Is the little rod thing my problem and if it is how do i fix it? I have tried to connect them but the rod just wont reach far enough so im stumped.

thanks

yep that is your problem... that is your wastegate, its set to open when the boost pressure reaches a specific amount (10 psi i believe.) this is how it works:

boost pressure goes into the "round canister", when it has enough pressure to overcome the spring inside it pushes it, the rod coming out the back of the round canister is attached to a flapper in the elbow coming off the turbo. when the pressure overcomes the spring and pushes on it the rod pushes forward and opens that flapper thus allowing the exhaust to bypass the turbo's turbine wheel and thus the turbo does not spin so no boost is made.

since yours is not connected your flapper is just getting blown open by exhaust and the turbo is not spinning because it sees no exhaust flow. You need to get it reconnected to it will hold the flapper closed. the other problem you could have had was if the flapper was stuck shut you would have just kept producing more and more boost until you started throwing rods, blowing gaskets, and melting internal type stuff you do not want to melt.

Its takes a good deal of force to move that rod, but unless your wastegate is bad it should move. never had this problem (yet) so i cant advise you on any easy way to fix it.

Yes that is your problem you need a new wastegate.

If it was working fine before, it should still be ok. What I do to hook the wastegate rod up is, remove the vacuum reference line from the wastegate actuator (the "canister") and hook some sort of small air pump to it ( I use a foot-operated bicycle tire pump).

Before you pump any air into the wastegate, make sure that the rod is just barely too SHORT to hook onto the flapper on the down elbow. Then give pump the pump up to ~10 psi, which will cause the wastegate to extend. Thus allowing you to reattach it nice and tight...

I TOTALY AGREE

ok

i used the air pump trick to reconnect them and it worked but now the car makes only 4 pounds of boost no matter where i adjust the boost guage to?!
i looked for a way to take the waste gate off but i can find none. but it did move when i pumped it with the bicycle pump so what do u think is wrong now? im stumped so anyhelp is appreciated thanks

p.s. I AGREE (lol i think xanax is funny)

is this under load, or just at idle and you are revving the engine? Turbos dont really make much boost when revved at idle, they make it under load... just a thought. if you are driving it around and only getting 4 psi then id start by checking all your vacuum lines and whatnot... you may have a leak either 1) showing an incorrect reading on your gauge or 2) leaking out your boost.

I have a little rattling noise coming from mine I think. Is that possible for it to kind of sound loose because on another turbo end-housing that we have I can feel where the little round disc for the wastegate is kind of loose. It looks like it might have lost a weld or something.
