Clutch cable keeps snapping - HELP!

This is the 3rd time I've had to replace my clutch cable and now it appears to be getting ready to do the same thing. The actual cable is pulling out of the housing and fraying. It's the part of the cable under the car.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

this may help it may not but i order a STEEDA clutch quadrant cable and fire wall adjuster steeda says it wont snap no madder how hard you shift and well it hasnt it maybe a cheap cable or your not sticken it up right not to sure what could be causing that.

Get a quadrant and FWA (UPR makes good pieces) and get a good stock Ford cable and you should be set.

I have the aluminum quadrant assembly. I don't remember the brand. If it breaks again, I think I'll try the Steeda since they say it won't snap.

94 Silver, You might want to remove the quadrant you have and check the groove where the cable rides. I had one (can't remember the make now, I've done that job several times on different cars) that had really bad casting burrs in the groove and they had prematurely frayed the cable. I used a rat tail file and cleaned the groove out on the quadrant really good and that took care of the problem.

If it's happening under the car or under the hood, make sure it's not in a bind or kinked or getting cooked by the headers or exhaust.

i'll check the quadrant. i think one of the times, it did snap there. the other seems like a defect in the cable. the black housing is actually pulling away from the cable and you can see exposed cable.

I heard it was hard to change the quadrant? does the FWA come with the rubber thingy ..you know what I mean!

same thing was happening to a friend of mine, it turned out it was rubbing on somthing and kept wearing it out.....sometimes when he shifted we could hear the cable beginning to fray....he ended up going thru about 3 cables before he finally realised the problem. make sure your cable isnt rubbing on anything (ie. firewall)

I actually had to enlarge the opening in my Steeda quadrant because the cable came throught at a slight angle, just enough to rub. It only took a few minutes with a Dremel, I just opened it up like I was porting it.

you are all talking about the qaudrant when he says it's fraying under the car????

Where exacly is it fraying/breaking????
any pics of it or the way you have it mounted in your car?? very weird to break near the trans if that's where your talking........

I'm almost positive it was caused by being too close to the headers because the black plastic covering looked somewhat melted. Check the exhaust and make sure there is some room between the cable and exhaust. I got the FRPP Cable and quadrant and havent had a problem yet, also moved exhaust a little to get it away from it more.

The binding common to adjustable cables is often due to misplacement of the adjusting nuts on the fork end of the cable. This will also cause the cable to wear and fray. Both nuts should be on the back side of the fork so that the domed nut faces the fork and the other nut serves as jam or locknut to the domed nut.
