Brake upgrades

I know this may have been done to death but I hate my stock brakes. what kind of a gain will I get on my 99GT with the Cobra 13" kit and some good pads on the front? how much will rears actually help?

I don't think you get any gains on stopping distance (maybe a few feet) with the Cobra kit, but what you get is less fade. Therefore, after several stops within a short time span (for example autocrossing) the brakes will stop the same whereas the stock GT brakes will be glowing red and won't work for $hit.

so what do you recomend for pads on the cobra kit taht may help a little more with fade and stopping distance. I am thinking slotted rotors and skipping the cross drill because I have heard things about the rotors cracking more

the rear is only 30% of you braking so not much to upgrade there. the cobra kit is not much of a calipure upgrade. I would try diffenent pads and maybe stainless lines unless you have deep pockets. if you have $2500-3k to drop you can get the baer or roush alcon setup. they are awesome but $$$$$. if you look at you stock brakes they are pretty nice calipures. dual piston pbr. that is the same thing that the cobra, saleen, roush use. they just have a 13inch rottor which does not do much for your one stop distance.

I have seen baer do a test that brought downs a car 60-0 in about 98 feet. the did the roush setup on horsepower tv with about the same results.

I do do some autoxing so the repeated stops to happen quite often.

I would look for something a little nicer than the cobra kit if you really hit the track. I would call up baer and see what they say. I think brembo has a front kit for aound 1k that might be somewhere in between the cobra and the alcon setups.

You could try the EBC GreenStuff or Hawk pads that seem to be so popular. And stainless lines as mentioned above.

Never heard of either...will just pads make you brake much better? I would have thought the rotors would have to be much better too.

I've had my cross drilled rotors for a while now. Never had any problems with them. The slotted rotors I don't like because every time you press on the brakes the top of the pad is sheered off which leads to less brake pad life.

saw the Horespower Tv test with the sn95 GT and the roush alcon..very nice setup..14" brakes..can it fir with 17" rims or do u have to go with 18 " ?

I have been having a hard time finding any good data on this. the tests vary so much. in the artical I posted about they had cobra brakes on that car and its 60-0 was 140ft which is supposedly worse than a stock gt. they may have had 18" wheels which can hurt braking though.

Is the mach 1 kit the same exact setup or is there a difference? Also, are they about the same price?

I believe it is the same kit, just doesn't have the word "cobra" on it or for the bullitt kit, the red caliper with white horse.

kirky: if you need something to reduce fade, I'd suggest the Brembo drilled rotors with Ferrodo pads. Ferrodo is a name I've seen pop up a lot on the Ferrari boards. Its also what comes with the big brake kits.

Another option I havent seen anybody mention (although there was a link to their site) is the StopTech kits. Cheaper than both Brembo and Baer's 13" 2piece rotor kit at just under $2000, they have a stiffer caliper and also patented bridge design and a little lighter weight. All in all, I've seen more people switching to this.

I was going to go wtih the Brembo kit, but decided to save and go with the StopTech kit. In the meantime, I'm getting what I suggested for kirky, the Brembo rotors and Ferrodo pads.
