Official Tremec 3650 Issues Thread

  • Sponsors (?)

I took mine in last week and there is no TSB yet but the dealer said that the tech line told them not to service the tranny yet but to keep the car??????????????? Maybe the TSB is coming within a week or two????????????? My union rep at work called Dearborn Assembly and they told him when the new parts are plentiful then and only then will a TSB come out. Meanwhile they replaced 2 idler pullies and rearend differential bushings.

I just got a call from the dealer today and they said the only TSB fix they have at the moment is to do a fluid change of the tranny and drive it for 500-1000 miles. It kind of pissed me off cause I changed the tranny fluid 2 weeks ago. I didn't say anything though cause I didn't want to be accused of causing the problems.

They did understand the 1-2 grind and was able to replicate the problem. They have no info on a new TSB coming out for the Tremec issues besides the fluid change TSB. They do want to keep the car until tomorrow to continue to do some more tests.

It may not be fixed 100% but at least it is all documented for when the TSB comes out.

My car is in the dealer today for the 1-2 shift problem and the noise made in the transmission in neutral. When I push the clutch in the noise goes away.

Also when I get on it... trying to shift into 2nd is very difficult.

I gave them the e-mail from Tremec that states that they know about the issues with the Tremec 3650 and that Ford is working on the problem and that a TSB will be out shortly.

I will let you know what happens.... Hopefully something good.

If you don't mind could you post or PM me the email address you used to email Tremec. Maybe if some more of us sent them emails the sooner something will get started.

Just picked up an 01 Cobra not long ago and it was the first thing I noticed. The 1-2 grind. It's very mild and does go away once the tranny's warmed up but it's still there. It feels like you haven't pressed the clutch all the way down when in fact you have! I test drove many cobra over the past few months while shopping around and noticed most of them were doing this. I thought it was just me and that this was normal up until I came across this thread. :damnit:

My brand new 2004 Mach has a problem. It's a smidgeon different that those described here, but very similar at the same time. Here's the deal: Sometimes when leaving first, not actually on the way into second yet, just going from 1st to Neutral on the way to 2nd, it will make a very loud CLUNK that you can feel throughout the car and hear very loudly. Passengers have looked at me and said "What the hell" on multiple occassions already and the car only has ~1100 miles.

Also, it sometimes will not go into 3rd or 4th gear AT ALL. You can force it somewhat (not too hard), but it grinds when you do.

The gears are flat out hard to find. I can't tell you the number of times, in the 3 weeks I've owned this car that I couldn't find 4th from 5th. On a few of those occassions, I've had trouble finding a substitute gear either. End up having to hit 5th again and go for try #2.

This is all while driving slowly around town and doesn't seem to be weather (cold)related or "cold" meaning it hasn't yet warmed up.

Took the car to local dealership yesterday, mentioned this thread and during our drive it wouldn't go into 3rd for me. Has another issue where the wiper fluid and wipers turn themselves on magically. Mentioned that and the fact the front bumper didn't have a place for me to fasten my license plate. Dealership agree to resolve wiper issue, put on plates that were in the car and look at the tranny.

Picked the car up and was told that I either wasn't getting into the gate when shifting (i.e. hitting the outside of the gate) -OR- trying to downshift while going to fast/rpm's too high. Happened on our drive while downshifting at approximately 30 mph. Hardly too "fast" or too high rpm for 3rd gear downshift. Windshield still had same waterspots from thunderstorm the previous day and if they would have looked at/replaced the wiper controls, you'd think they would have tested them afterwards. License plates not installed and holes not drilled. Had to force dealership before I left to get the plates on. What a crappy experience for a 3 week old $24,000 car.

My service manager told me yesterday that he will be installing a couple more new parts to my 3650. I had copied a guys parts list from this thread and I noticed he had a couple of more parts than I did that were used for the so called "fix". He checked with ford about the parts and as soon as he can get them he will be installing them. He also told me it should take out all the notchyness. Lets hope so! I just want it to shift like it should , LIKE A NEW CAR.

I just talked to the service manager at my dealer and still got the run around....

He says there's nothing currently issed to fix the 3650 trans and that the only suggestion from his Ford Rep was to change the fluid to a Synthetic like Redline.. His Ford Rep knows nothing of any TSB or plans for one.

He also stated that the part #'s i faxed to him that are listed on this site (and on the scanned invoice i printed and faxed) are NOT Ford Part #'s..

These guys are not like the other dealers you have... you guys are lucky

I'm considering another dealer.

What'up gentlemen? I hate to be responding to this damn thread, but I am. My trans is acting up and I get the nasty 1-2 grind. I bought the 98'GT back in December shifted like a dream, had the trans fluid changed and now it shifts like a have a set of box wrenches in the tranny. It seems like the synchros aren't spinning fast enough. Anybody in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago know of a good dealership to take my car to. By the way what is a "TSB"?

If they aren't Ford parts, why is it that I can look up those parts at fordparts.com? I told my service manager about them and they were able to look up the parts in their system. Your dealer is full of it.

TSB= Technical Service Bulletin

The adventure continues.

Back in Feb Ford swapped out my tranny for a new one, but unfort the notchy bs was still there.

I was able to verify that the tranny was indeed brand new, but here's the catch.

My contact over at Tremec today confirmed that while the tranny is new, it was built before the replacement parts were issued.

So now I emailed my other contact at Ford who did swap out the orig tranny and I'm waiting for his response.

Going to get interesting.

I have a 2002 Mustang GT 5 Speed that has had the Second gear clash when cold since new. I have the 6 year 75,000 mile ESP, and the 3 year 36,000 mile maintenance plan. The car currently has 22,500 miles on it. At 5000 miles the local Dealer (not selling dealer)
agreed the car had the 2nd gear clash, however they do not have a certified transmisson tech on staff.
At 10,000 miles I returned it to selling dealer for service and the 2nd gear clash problem.
They gave me a car, and kept the Mustang for a week, . the work order says
"DIAG,REMOVE and OVERHAUL TRANS. Replace SECOND GEAR,SYNCRO,BLOCKING RINGS.

Total warranty charge was 1735.48, 1000.57 in parts, 438.46 in labor, 296.45 misc.
The tranny felt and acted the same to me.

Under recommedation of other owners I tried GM Syncromesh in the transmission, and it made no difference. After 2000 miles I had the Syncromesh replaced with Mercon V as recommended. At 15,000 miles had the selling dealer service it again, and got a NPF on the 2nd Gear clash. Between 15 and 20,000 the car started being difficult to shift into Reverse without clashing. At 20,000 miles I left the vehicle overnite so they could check the transmission cold, Service Manager drove it and said it was fine, as did the tech. They did a TSB to adjust the clutch for the reverse problem, however it did not help... here's hoping for a TSB soon. Car is now only a weekend driver.

Anyone know of a good Ford / Lincoln shop in the North Alabama area. I have some mods I want done to the GT, and a 1998 Lincoln Mark VIII.

Thanks,
Rex
