Largest tires possible for my 66?

Wow... has this thread gone nutz or what? Hey man, sorry if I offended you and your car. I just really think the tire sticking out like that is tacky. I've gathered from the previous posts that you understand that and if you had the cash, you'd do it differently. Most of us feel your pain. I myself have a mortgage and two kids that come before my Mustang. Funds are stressed.

My "hoopty" comment wasn't meant to hurt your feelings... just meant to possibly give a person a clue that that look just isn't "in" anymore. Most people that dress funny, or do goofy things just don't know any better or realize it. And if a friend or family member doesn't bring it to their attention, they will go on the rest of their lives that way.

So consider my comment, as a fellow Classic Mustang owner, just a bit of friendly advice.

May you be fortunate enough in the near future to have the funds to modify your car the way you'd like. Good luck! :)

Anyone else notice the word "grammer" used twice in this thread? Hahaa, it's grammAr guys lol. Don't mean to nitpick, I was a spelling bee champ when I was a kid.
The gyuy didn't come out preaching about how awesome his setup was, he just posted a pic.
If you forgive me for misspelling "grammar", I'll overlook your use of the word "gyuy". :D Sorry, dude, but since we're all getting so wound up, I couldn't resist!

That is totally beside the point. The real issue now is who can insult, belittle, ridicule, or persecute the other guy! It's kinda funny how once the subject is sidelined, it turns into a battle royal where everyone kinda feels victorious as long as they get in one good cheap shot. Discuss tire sizes? Where's the fun in that? What amazes me is that after all the trash-talk, we expect someone to help with every piddly problem with each of our cars and don't know why they won't. Of course we all pretty much know it all anyway, we're just waiting for someone to share our wealth of knowledge with.

Aw man you got me :rlaugh:

Believe it or not, I saw that typo right after I hit submit reply and decided I was too damn lazy to fix it. True story, no, really :D .

Anyway, to stay on topic (if the guy is still around) try this link.

Street or Track

I was told to check it out in my own tire/wheel size thread. Drop those guys a line, I'm sure they could help you out more than most of us could, well past the basic stuff anyway. Good luck.

I have found that a 10 inch wide tire, maximum not tread but just overall width, and no taller than 26.5 inches on a stock ride height car 65 or 66 without modifying anything with a 8 inch wheel with a backspacing of 4.5 or even 4.75 will work. Unfortunatley most wheels dont come standard with that backspacing. It seems 4.5 is a more popular size than 4.75 which puts the wheel inside the wheelhouse, and you still have enough clearance between the tire and leaf spring. If you start lowering the car measurements start to get critical. I hope this puts this whole thing to rest. Can't we all just get along! :rlaugh:

----------295/50/15s------- 295/50/15s------------295/50/15s------------
will fit nicly in case my post was pased up, i havent read all the threads but everyone is talking about 275's, 295's hook nice :D and leave nice marks on the floor from power braking and dougnuts :)

295/50/15 with the american racing 15x8 black rims, dont know the offset but its a standard offset, no other options were available, the car has a new set of 5 leaf standard eye springs and it all fits, if i hit a hard dip it will lightly scap with one person in the car, i dont plan on trying any passengers, its sure to hit.

Also, it runs flush with the stock fenders, well, just SLIGHTLY sticks out but its not ghetto. Unfortunatly i dont have pics yet, maybee later this week.

Are you sure you mean 295/50/15s? If so..Pic please.

I got a pic of a car TODAY with that tire size with some huge fender flares at the NMRA race.

If I am correct most 295x50 15 are at least 12" wide there is just no way these will fit without mods or you can refer to the pics in this thread and see for yourself how 275s fit on the coupe in those pics, and 295s are wider still. I think there is a misconception of what you can bolt on and what actually does fit properly

I asked the same thing to my local Mustang shop and they showed me a 66 with 16x8's with ( memory fails me ) I'm pretty sure 245's out back and 225's up front. They said that it can go bigger, but 16x8's with a 4.5" backspacing works and perform really well for street applications. They like restored/stock looks so this is somewhat their opinion, but if you want to look at it another way here we go, finacially! Stock 14" wheels price? w/e like 100 dollars a wheel for some nice 14's, once u get up to 16 the price more than doubles. my dad has 18x10's and 265's on his boxter s, and my mom has 17x8 i think...i'll look in the morn they have the same HP and while the boxter hooks better, it doesnt hook THAT much better than my mom's so...when u are looking for tires and wheels i've started thinking to myself, not what is the biggest, but what is the best for my car. 16x8's might be small for you or w/e but they work...oh they work !

I fit my friends 17x9" cobra R's in the back of my 65...they are 265/40's....i have already rolled the wheel-well lips and they just barely fit...if the proper backspacing was used, 255/40-17's would be awsome.

Man, you need to shop around! Nice 16" wheels for $800!? 14" wheels for $400?? Maybe if you are buying from an overpriced shop!!! I bought my 17" chrome bullets for a hair under $800!

Thats what i have on my stang right now, 295/50/15's with 15x8 rims in the back, with a new set of leaf springs you dont even need any shackles to lift it either, so basically it bolts on, i banged the inner fenders a bit because it would hit SOMETIMES with 1 passenger, now it doesnt rub with a passenger, granted you can only drive with one other person, it depends how bad you want to look of some fatty tires in the back. I can live with only being able to drive with one other person, if you need to you can get some shackles and lift it more than stock to be able to drive with other people in it. I'll try to get some pics if not soon enough i'll post another thread to show you guys.

but we just saw a car with 275's and they stick out the side of the car some good inches, please show us a picture of what your tires look like from an angle and the back?

did i say a peice? im pretty sure i said all together...all together for some good wheels 400 for 14" wheels is pretty good. M+ has 16x8 TT2 for 800 or so dollars.

This past weekend a buddy of mine got new wheels for his '04 mustang....with 315's tires for the rear, so I said "lets see if they would fit on the '65", the inside of the tires were touching the leaf spring and the outsides were sticking out a good 1 to 1.5 inches. I could not imagine a 295 fitting properly.

Man, this is an old post, back in 2004, lol

This was the only pic I had on my computer, but those are 295/50/15s on a 15x8 inch wheel with stock springs (no shackles)
